Nominations and applications are invited for a full-time, twelve-month faculty position with corresponding administrative responsibilities as Chair, Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health Professions, the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Faculty rank and tenure status are commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Department of Occupational Therapy offers graduate programs for both entry level and post professional students, and co-sponsors an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science with the Department of Physical Therapy. A vibrant faculty offers research expertise in several areas and the Department’s Low Vision Therapy Program is a unique national resource. The UAB/Lakeshore Foundation Research Collaborative offers excellent research opportunities for faculty and students. The entry-level Occupational Therapy program is currently ranked 25th by U.S. News & World Report. We are seeking an innovative and dynamic leader for a progressive and energetic faculty. 

 

The role of Chair is primarily responsible for providing broad, strategic oversight that will further advance the educational, clinical, and research initiatives of the Department of Occupational Therapy.  The successful candidate will possess proven leadership abilities capable of providing a level of guidance that will enhance current departmental programs and foster future academic collaborations throughout the UAB community and abroad. The Department of Occupational Therapy Chair will have primary focus on building a research agenda, administration of department operations, and fostering engagement with community organizations to advance the department’s mission and visibility. Additional responsibilities include participation in teaching, service, and scholarly activities, but this individual will not serve a dual role as Program Director for the entry-level occupational therapy degree program. Desired qualifications include previous experience in academic administration, graduate-level teaching, and research. A doctoral degree from an accredited university is required. 

 

Organizationally, the Department of Occupational Therapy is one of five departments in the School of Health Professions (SHP). SHP is one of the nation’s largest and most diverse schools of its type with over twenty programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. The UAB School of Health Professions is one of six health centered schools in a thriving academic medical center. UAB is among the highest tier of US research institutions, with total funding of approximately $510 million per year and SHP is consistently ranked among the top in NIH funding for similar schools.
