Florida State University (FSU) seeks a new Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy who will partner with the College’s faculty, staff, and students while working closely with the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs to lead the College in its continued pursuit of academic excellence. The skills sought are visionary and collaborative leadership coupled with strong administrative and interpersonal skills. The College of Social Sciences and Public Policy works in collaboration with FSU’s other colleges and the University’s senior administration to advance the University’s academic mission and Florida State’s goal of being a “Top 25” public university.
Position Overview: The new Dean will serve as the chief academic officer and chief administrator of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy and will report to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. He/she will provide open leadership that is effective in preserving and enhancing the College’s commitment to addressing virtually every economic, political, and social issue that society is facing in the 21st century. The Dean will be responsible for strategic, operational, and financial matters, while being inclusive and supportive of broad diversity. The Dean will also be responsible for anchoring the College’s relationships with alumni, the academy, and the larger public, and fundraising will be an ongoing priority for the Dean. This will involve establishing and enhancing forward-looking development initiatives, such as the Get More Than a Degree Initiative, while promoting the achievements of the College’s faculty and students. The Dean will pursue a bold vision for the future with a goal of enhancing the reputation of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy.
Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess academic and professional credentials sufficient to engender respect from the academy, the state university system, and the community at large. Preferably, the Dean will display both a successful record as a faculty member and evidence of leadership experience in higher education. The new Dean must be adept at supervision and at working with faculty, staff, a diverse student body, community partners, alumni, and donors.
