Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

Saint Joseph’s University invites applications, nominations, and inquiries for the position of Dean, College of Arts and Sciences. Saint Joseph’s is a private, independent university located on a beautiful campus on the edge of Philadelphia. For more than 160 years, Saint Joseph’s has offered a rigorous Jesuit education – one that demands high achievement, expands knowledge, deepens understanding, stresses effective reasoning and communication, and develops moral and spiritual character.

This is a time of renewal and reinvigoration for Saint Joseph’s University. A new president, Mark C. Reed, was inaugurated in 2015 and is the university’s first lay president. A new provost, Jeanne Brady, was appointed in 2016. Together they have launched a strategic planning process to engage the entire community in identifying challenges and opportunities for the future and creating a forward-looking plan to advance the university and its mission.

The next Dean will join the Saint Joseph’s community as the momentum toward a new strategy is emerging and will play a critical role in implementing the plan, and in ensuring the centrality of the College of Arts and Sciences in the academic mission of the University. Saint Joseph’s seeks a strategic thinker who will partner with the President and Provost, the entire leadership team and the faculty to increase academic rigor, develop innovative programs, ensure a student body of outstanding academic quality, deepen the institution’s commitment to inclusive excellence and strengthen Saint Joseph’s identity and impact.

Applicants for Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences should have an affinity for the Catholic and Jesuit mission in addition to an earned doctorate, tenured status, and demonstrated accomplishments as a teacher/scholar in an Arts or Science field. The ideal candidate will possess an extensive record of academic administrative leadership, and the ability to both collaborate with and motivate diverse constituencies. The candidate should be familiar with the principles of academic governance, and have a track record of leading implementation of a strategic vision. The candidate should also have astute financial management skills in an academic environment, experience developing, implementing and assessing rigorous and innovative academic programs, and a demonstrated capacity to promote, support, and sustain a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, students, alumni, and staff.
