Assistant Professor, Molecular Virology
The Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) invites applications for a full-time, tenure stream faculty position in molecular virology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an expected start date of July 1, 2022.
The successful candidate in this search MAY BE eligible for nomination for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair if they self-identify as a member of the four federally designated groups, as defined by the Employment Equity Act (women, visible minorities, persons with disabilities and Indigenous persons) or as trans, non-binary or Two-spirit, as part of the University of Toronto’s implementation of its Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan.
Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars. Nominees should be within ten years of receiving their PhD. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The nominee’s research area must align with the subject matter eligibility of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Virology/Microbiology/Molecular Biology or a related discipline at the time of appointment, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates must provide strong evidence of research of an internationally competitive caliber, in the area of molecular virology, virus-host interactions or a related area as evidenced by a record of publications in leading journals in the field as well as presentations at significant conferences, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. The successful candidate will be expected to mount an innovative, competitive, and independently funded research program in the broadly defined area of molecular virology. The candidate will also be invited to become a key member of the Emerging and Pandemic Infection Consortium (EPIC; epic.utoronto.ca), a program that marshals the advanced research infrastructure and the world-renowned research and training expertise of the U of T and its affiliated hospital network to allow an integrated innovative response to infectious diseases. Applicants that will effectively use the University’s state-of-the-art containment level 3 facilities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by accomplishments which can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, excellent conference presentations or posters, as well as strong endorsements by referees. A teaching dossier should be provided that includes a teaching statement, and can include sample course materials, teaching evaluations, and/or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities.
