Professor and Director, FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training

The Florida State University School of Theatre invites applications for the position of Director of the renowned FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training at the rank of Full Professor.  The Conservatory Director will provide innovative and inspiring leadership, work with the faculty, School of Theatre administration, students, and stakeholders to develop and advance a strategic vision for the program and demonstrate the ability to embody, support, and convey the excellence of the program to varying audiences. Candidates with a compelling record of professional engagement and administrative experience are invited to apply.  This is a twelve-month appointment.  An MFA or equivalent terminal degree is required, as is successful college-level teaching and leadership experience.

The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training is an acclaimed three-year graduate program that combines rigorous classroom training with guest artist workshops and professional production experience which culminates in a Master of Fine Arts degree.  Located in the thriving arts community of beautiful Sarasota, FL, the program has a long-standing partnership with the Asolo Repertory Theatre.

Upon graduation, all students are eligible to join Actors’ Equity Association and enter the ranks of this country’s most highly regarded professional artists. Graduates of our program have appeared on and off Broadway, in regional theatres, in feature films and on television. The program was initiated by the Florida State University School of Theatre in Tallahassee in 1968 and moved to Sarasota five years later to establish a permanent relationship with the Asolo Repertory Theatre.

The ideal candidate will be a compassionate and innovative leader and educator with the desire and experience to cultivate a dynamic program in collaboration and consultation with Department faculty and staff, particularly in the following areas:

  • Daily administration and programming of the MFA Acting Program
  • Producing the Conservatory’s performance season, supporting the students, faculty, and staff.  
  • The Director will work under the guidance and support of the Director and Chair of the School of Theatre to collaborate on financial decisions, fundraising goals, recruitment, curriculum, and strategic planning for the MFA Program, ensuring the program’s success. 
  • The Director will also work closely with the leadership of the Asolo Repertory Theatre and the FSU School of Theatre in support of the educational goals of the MFA Program. 
  • Teaching responsibilities for this position include courses on Advanced Play Analysis and the Business of Acting.  
  • The position requires serving on committees, assisting in the mentoring of students, and working in cooperation with faculty and staff in fulfilling the educational mission of the School of Theatre.  
  • A successful candidate would bring practical leadership experience in theatre alongside a record of teaching in higher education.
