Associate Vice President for Research, Director of the Office of Technology Management

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Associate Vice President for Research and Director, Office of the Technology Management within the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research. The mission of the Office of Technology Management is to protect Penn State intellectual property, identify its commercial potential, and stimulate economic development through the transfer of Penn State technologies to the marketplace. Penn State research expenditures in 2020 were $1.01 billion.

Responsibilities include setting the strategic vision for Penn State's technology transfer enterprise, management of licensing professionals and administrative staff, including oversight of the quantity and quality of the work product of licensing managers and other support staff; regular review and enhancement of technology transfer processes; assessment of new inventions, including potential commercial value, patentability, market analysis; development and implementation of intellectual property protections strategies including patent protection, copyright protection, trademark protection and know-how; manage a large portfolio of U.S. and international patents and patent applications; develop commercialization strategies of emerging technologies; negotiate, monitor and enforce agreements including confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, interinstitutional agreements, option agreements and license agreements; and advise Office of Sponsored Programs negotiators regarding intellectual property in sponsored research agreements.

This position will report directly to the Senior Vice President for Research and will work collaboratively with a wide range of academic and administrative units including the office of entrepreneurship and commercialization, office of industrial partnerships, and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northeast PA. The Associate Vice President will work closely with the Office of General Counsel to review and approve select agreements, enforce patent rights and license agreements; work with preferred providers of patent legal services to pursue protection of university intellectual property. This position functions as an ambassador for technology commercialization and will encourage participation in the technology transfer process across the university, provide guidance and information to faculty, staff and students regarding university intellectual property policies and procedures, and provide presentations/ webinars to internal and external groups regarding Penn State policies, intellectual property management, and tech transfer.

Requirements:

Master's or Ph.D. in engineering, biological science, physical science, or business administration preferred. The qualified individual should have a minimum of ten years of experience in the management and marketing of intellectual property and a minimum of two years of experience directing technology transfer, with broad expertise in intellectual property protection and commercialization strategies, technology marketing, academic technology transfer, identification of commercial partners, licensing, negotiation, and creation of start-up companies.
