In searching for its next Provost, Wright State University seeks an individual of significant scholarly accomplishment, with the experience, dedication, breadth of vision, and zeal to serve as the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of a metropolitan, research university.

Key Responsibilities:

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the University President and is responsible for providing leadership for the university colleges and schools, guiding academic initiatives, supervising scholarship and research activities, and advancing global initiatives.  The key responsibilities include:

  • Advising the University President and the Board of Trustees on matters related to academic affairs, research, technology transfer and commercialization, graduate studies and student affairs.
  • Recruiting, hiring, and reviewing deans and ensuring that they successfully implement programs to achieve the university’s academic, research and engagement priorities.
  • Encouraging and promoting effective interdisciplinary collaborations across the university that will leverage academic resources to the benefit of the university and the state of Ohio. These include supporting the university’s commitment to the growth of online education, ongoing commitment to external accreditation through assessment and program review, ensuring academic quality and productivity, as well as continued planning for the coordinated use of information technology to support the academic mission.
  • Developing metrics-based university-wide academic goals, strategies, and educational activities for implementation, including program planning, policy analysis, planning for diversity, equity and inclusion, faculty development, international education and engagement, student affairs, and instructional technology.
  • Working closely with the Faculty Senate and Academic Deans to support faculty development to ensure academic excellence, accountability, and efficiency in all academic programs.
  • Working collaboratively with the colleges, schools and the Lake Campus to ensure access and affordability of program offerings and to find innovative and cost-effective methods of program delivery.
  • Representing the university with external organizations and state agencies; maintaining relationships with national and international higher education leadership and policy organizations that promote the enhancement of teaching, research and public service.
  • Ensuring that the functions of academic affairs, student life, the research enterprise, the University Libraries, the Graduate School, and enrollment management are deliberated robustly, with a focus on student success and optimal use of resources.
  • Demonstrating an appreciation of the university’s mission and the ability to guide its academic enterprise toward even greater prominence in the face of an evolving national landscape for higher education.

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate (or terminal degree appropriate to their discipline) from an accredited institution.
  • A demonstrated record of professional accomplishments in teaching and scholarship that meet the qualifications for appointment to the rank of Professor in a particular department or school at Wright State University.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community; including achievements in building and leading diverse leadership teams.
  • A track record of commitment to student success and academic quality.
  • Excellent leadership skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and partners, demonstrated through a record of mentorship and leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that support the Provost’s role as a spokesperson for the university.
  • A record of budgetary and financial management skills sufficient to oversee a large and complex organization.
  • Experience in the recruitment, hiring, retention and review of direct reports.
  • Demonstrated coaching and relationship development skills to ensure that direct reports successfully implement programs to achieve the university’s academic, research and engagement priorities while meeting unit goals.
  • Experience working with community partners to facilitate relationships between a research university and the economic development of a region.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Experience both developing and supporting mission-guided planning and leadership.
  • Record of strategic thinking and long-range planning.
  • Commitment to transparency, integrity, and ethical standards of excellence.
  • Experience with and a record of success in securing grants and/or contracts, fundraising, and interacting with major donors.
  • Executive level experience at a university with multiple campuses.
