The Department of Media and Information (MI) invites applicants for one Associate or Full Professor position to complement and expand our dynamic and interdisciplinary faculty.

 

Outstanding candidates may be considered for a Brandt Endowed Professorship. Ellis (Ned) Brandt was a graduate of MSU’s School of Journalism, and a prominent Michigan philanthropist.

 

The Department values the contribution of different disciplines, different ways of knowing, and different ways of doing, in research and creative activities that advance knowledge and transform lives in ways that lead to better quality of life for individuals and communities.

 

The position is part of our college’s multi-position thematic hire with a focus on race, ethnicity, gender, and/or social inequalities. We seek scholars who lead their field and whose research, -creative works, teaching, and/or service address systemic inequities and who will advance the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The goal of the thematic hire is to grow our collaborative network of scholars focused on communication and disparities across a broad range of subdisciplines, bringing together new hires and existing faculty experts. Successful candidates will join a community of scholars and practitioners working at the college to enhance social justice through research in the fields of communication, journalism studies, advertising, public relations, information science, game studies, and communicative sciences and disorders. The hiring initiative will bring in five new faculty over two years.

 

The MI faculty come from a range of disciplines, including communication, information science, media, human-computer interaction, management, psychology, sociology, economics, science and technology studies, and design to complement and create a unique intellectual energy. Our faculty advance theory and research, build human-centered technology, design traditional and interactive games and media experiences, work with policy makers, and pursue new forms of scholarship. Our department is a member of the iSchools consortium and has a top ranked program in communication, and game design and development.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field and will have developed a national and/or international research reputation. The candidate will be evaluated relative to peers at a similar stages in their careers, potential scholarly impact, potential to contribute to department instruction, potential service to the University and their profession (including student mentoring and public communication), respect and interest in different approaches and ways of knowing, and their record and potential to contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion in areas of research-creative activity, instruction, service, and outreach.
