Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate School Dean.  This position is responsible for the development, direction, and management of the research, scholarly, and creative activity programs of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) and will lead the Graduate School in the development of research programs and graduate education by supporting the graduate faculty, deans and the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate School Dean also has direct responsibility for the effective management of the Office of Sponsored Project Administration, the Office of Research Compliance, the McNair Scholars Program, and a number of research related units, including the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences and the Center for Ecology; the Meyers Institute for Interdisciplinary Research in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry; the Materials Technology Center; and the Advanced Coal and Energy Research Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Chancellor and serve on the Chancellor’s Cabinet and Chancellor’s Leadership Council to promote the highest standards of quality in pursuit of innovative research and scholarship, and to advance SIU Carbondale’s national and international presence and reputation in research and graduate education.
  • Provide strong and effective leadership, vision, promotion and advocacy for the research, creative activity, and scholarship, including, technology transfer, intellectual property, commercialization and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic leadership, innovation, and vision to nurture the further development of high-impact research, and provide support for graduate education and international initiatives at SIU Carbondale.
  • Create and implement strategies to engage undergraduate students in research, scholarly pursuits and creative activities.
  • Develop, review, and uphold policies and practices that support and protect the diversity of faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity, and other research-related activity, including federal and state compliance regulations.
  • Expand the University’s research capacity by fostering an environment where campus aggressively seeks and attracts funding from diverse sources and serve as a liaison with federal, state, corporate and philanthropic funding sources to build partnerships with external stakeholders.
  • Provide effective budget and personnel management.
  • Work with the provost, deans, faculty and the Graduate Council toward aligning new graduate offerings with research activities of the University, taking maximum advantage of existing centers and institutes and provide expertise in strengthening current graduate programs.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and update educational policies procedures, and strategies governing the Graduate School as determined by the Graduate Council.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) with a record of demonstrated research, scholarly accomplishments or creative activities.
  • Academic qualifications sufficient to support an appointment at the rank of Professor in an appropriate department, including scholarly achievements and experience in teaching and direction of graduate student research and/or scholarly and creative activity, preferably at the doctoral level.
  • An intimate knowledge of research and graduate administration, research programs, and graduate education and experience in supporting undergraduate research opportunities.
  • Demonstrated administrative ability, preferably with experience as chief executive officer of a department, school, college or similar unit.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with funding procedures and agencies, and success in obtaining and administering funded grants in support of innovative research, scholarly, or creative activity.
  • Evidence of ability to provide strong, effective leadership through consultative decision-making processes and collegial engagement along with a genuine interest in and a willingness to be visible in the campus community.
  • High ethical standards with a commitment to excellence in research, quality graduate education and a commitment to academic freedom and informed discussion that encourages diversity and the expression of divergent opinions.
  • The ability to communicate effectively to multiple internal and external audiences, including the public, government, and corporate sectors and a demonstrated ability to promote strong extra-institutional partnerships.
