As one of the few endowed colleges of the arts in the Big Ten, and the only named College at the university, the next Dean will inherit a thriving College, composed of three schools, two centers, and three affiliated units, with over 100 faculty and 36 staff who support academic and creative activities, and an undergraduate and graduate student population of nearly 1,000. The College offers academic and performance opportunities from the undergraduate through the doctoral levels and offers a range of coursework and majors that span artistic disciplines in art, art history, dance, emerging media arts, film, graphic design, music, music education, and theatre. Thanks to a groundbreaking $57 million partnership between the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, the Johnny Carson Foundation, and numerous private industry partners, the College is uniquely positioned to support cutting edge education, research, and creative activity. The scholarly and creative work of faculty, students, and alumni earns national and international recognition; more than $90M of new construction and renovated facilities are in the design process and will be underway; a diverse group of donors are committed to supporting the arts; and the faculty, staff, and student populations are energetic and engaged.

The College’s next Dean will be a passionate, bold, and creative administrator, who will bring an abiding belief in the power of the arts and liberal arts education to bear in the role. The Dean will possess an understanding of the current higher education landscape and, within that context, a vision for what arts education can and should be in the coming decades. The Dean will have the ability to work with colleagues within the College and across the university to develop programs and offerings that are exciting and relevant, and that prepare students for lives of personal and professional fulfillment and success.

The successful candidate will be committed to shared governance and faculty and staff professional development; dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence; have the ability and experience necessary to fundraise broadly; and possess the skills to generate and manage resources adeptly within the context of UNL’s incentive-based budgeting model. The Dean should have the creative and/or scholarly credentials suitable for tenure as a full professor within the College.
