George Mason University’s Global Affairs Program (GLOA) and School of Integrative Studies (SIS) invite applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Global Environment to start August 2022. The tenure home of this position is GLOA.

GLOA and SIS seek applicants whose research and teaching are in at least one of the following areas: climate change, energy, environmental justice, environmental migration, environmental policy and governance, environmental security, global environmental regimes, race and the environment, social ecology, and/or sustainability. Pertinent disciplinary backgrounds would include, but not be limited to, environment and sustainability, science and technology studies, public policy, global studies, international relations, sociology, geography, political science, or closely related fields. Preference will be given to those who complement rather than duplicate existing program expertise and faculty research in the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. Scholars working with Native (or Indigenous) North American peoples would also be welcome as would those whose research interests are cross-country or -region. The primary unit is the Global Affairs Program, and the position will contribute teaching and service to SIS.

We are looking for a candidate who can contribute in teaching, advising, and programming to both the indicated areas of specialization as well as the core curriculum in our undergraduate and graduate (master’s) programs. The successful candidate will be expected to sustain a robust research program in their area of expertise, produce peer-reviewed publications, seek external grant funding, engage in multidisciplinary collaborations, mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in faculty governance as well as professional organizations and societies.

George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates who will enrich the university’s academic and culturally inclusive environment to apply.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a pertinent field or discipline as specified above by time of appointment;
  • Demonstrably strong potential for excellence in scholarship;
  • Record of successful teaching;
  • Ability and commitment to teach introductory courses and advanced courses on the environment in Global Affairs and SIS; and
  • Commitment to working with students of diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applicants with active research profile in pertinent topics;
  • Strong quantitative or mixed research methods that contribute to the methodological diversity of GLOA and SIS;
  • Teaching and research interests involve regions in geographic locales that would complement faculty research in the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe or whose teaching and research interests are cross-country or –region; and
  • Experience teaching in interdisciplinary classroom settings and working with a diverse student population.
