President

President

As it nears its sixth decade serving Mainers and students from across New England, the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for an experienced, visionary leader with an entrepreneurial outlook to serve as its next president.

UMA has over 5,600 students—a robust population of dual enrollment students and many adult learners—accessing UMA’s multiple sites, centers, campuses, and distance offerings. With the president’s leadership, UMA will continue to transform the lives of students of every age and background across the State of Maine and beyond through access to high-quality distance and on-site education, excellent student support and civic engagement, and innovative professional and liberal arts programs.

Established in 1965, UMA is the youngest of the institutions in the University of Maine System. UMA also is the third-largest public university in Maine. With its multiple locations and long-term expertise in online and distance learning, UMA is generally considered the institution of choice for Mainers of all ages who want to attend college without uprooting their lives.

Reporting directly to the Chancellor of the University of Maine System, Dannel Malloy, the UMA president serves as the executive officer of UMA, overseeing all aspects of operations within the approved mission and implementing the policies and procedures set forth by the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees.

The president is charged with a set of traditional responsibilities enumerated here by the Board. The president will advance UMA’s principal mission of excellence in teaching, research, and service; strategic planning; budgeting; philanthropy; faculty and staff development; outreach; and alumni and community relations.

Priorities for the next president include ensuring the relevancy of UMA’s academic offerings; leveraging UMA’s unique infrastructure and brand position in a competitive market; collaborating with the leaders of other University of Maine System leaders to place the state’s interests above individual institutions; and enhancing industry and community impact. The next president of UMA must be a highly engaged and collaborative leader with a deep understanding of the evolving challenges facing public higher education at the state and national levels. The president will be energized by the unique possibilities for leadership presented by the changing landscape in Maine and the importance of UMA in the lives of Mainers all across the state. The next president will value the real-life experience, including military service, that many UMA students bring to their studies.
