Reporting to the Provost and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President will provide thoughtful and rigorous academic leadership of Hunter; collaborate with the Provost to build an institution-wide culture of best practices in executive academic management; and ensure academic resources are carefully deployed to advance the mission of the College.
In collaboration with the Provost, deans, and faculty, the Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President will provide leadership in ensuring the quality of existing academic programs and strategically developing new programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In particular, the successful candidate will foster an institution-wide climate of academic innovation and experimentation, oversee and optimize the process for academic program review and new academic program approval, oversee institutional research operations, and academic assessment. The Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President will monitor academic program success with respect to enrollment, retention, graduation and time to degree, and encourage new approaches to curricula, and pedagogy. The successful candidate will provide administrative oversight for the College’s research operations, and oversee the College’s libraries and Learning Centers. Across each of these areas, the appointee will strengthen the academic budget process, resource allocation, and longer-term academic planning.
The Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President will work with the Provost and other senior staff to achieve the goals outlined in the strategic plan: deepening the College’s research capabilities, strengthening the institution’s general education curriculum, improving overall institutional effectiveness and academic assessment, enhancing teaching and learning, expanding the use of educational technology, strategically developing new academic programs, and encouraging interdisciplinarity in Hunter’s curriculum, teaching, and research.
As appropriate, the will represent the Office of the Provost at meetings, presentations and forums across the campus, within the larger CUNY system, and with external stakeholders. Finally, the Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President acts on behalf of the Provost when required, writes reports and policy statements, and performs other management and administrative responsibilities as assigned.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.
The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate and a strong a record of scholarly and professional accomplishment meriting appointment as a tenured full professor in an academic discipline. S/he will show demonstrated administrative skills and a hands-on approach, and will be engaged, innovative, and most importantly, motivated by a clear commitment to students. The ideal candidate will have the managerial and organizational skills and political acumen to navigate a complex academic setting, build strong relationships with other senior administrators and deans, earn the respect of faculty, encourage communication and collaboration across the different academic and professional schools, and have a keen understanding of the major issues, trends, and opportunities of U.S. research universities. S/he will also have significant successful experience in curriculum development and implementation; general education, interdisciplinary programs; and academic assessment and evaluation.
