Dean of Academic Affairs

Dean of Academic Affairs

Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) invites applications for the position of the Dean of Academic Affairs. As KCAD’s chief academic officer, the Dean of Academic Affairs is charged with overall responsibility for the vision, accomplishments, and success of the College’s academic programs and reports directly to the President of KCAD. The Dean of Academic Affairs joins the College’s senior leadership team and is responsible for collaborating with faculty, students, staff and others to create a unified vision for KCAD’s academic programs and for providing strategic leadership to advance the overall quality, reputation, stature, and aspirational goals of the College. The Dean is an experienced leader with a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion within the institution and in relationship to the urban community of Grand Rapids.

KCAD was established in 1928 by Helen Miller Kendall, the wife of David Wollcott Kendall, a nationally known furniture designer. KCAD’s more than 1,200 students are a blend of dynamic personalities that form a vibrant community with a passion for all things creative. The College currently offers 17 undergraduate and five graduate programs in specialized and overlapping areas of art and design as well as continuing studies. Grand Rapids Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) merged with KCAD in 2013 and serves as a vital resource for the College as well as continuing in its role as the premier venue for contemporary art in the region.

KCAD is nestled in the heart of the creative community of downtown Grand Rapids, MI. The city is the second largest in Michigan and combines big city amenities with small town charm. Thanks in part to a “culture of collaboration” among the city’s philanthropists, Grand Rapids has cultivated a diverse and thriving arts community. KCAD’s campus is located a mere 30 minutes from the pristine shores of Lake Michigan, and is within walking distance of an advancing medical mile and a unique array of cultural institutions, restaurants, art galleries, and shopping. West Michigan offers the benefits and beauty of the four seasons with a full range of recreational opportunities.

The ideal candidate will meet minimum qualifications, which include an earned terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education; evidence of distinguished college-level teaching, scholarly research/creative activity, and service sufficient to have earned tenure and the rank of full professor; and 3-5 years of administrative leadership. Preferred qualities include; a terminal degree in a field aligned with the curricular programs of KCAD; experience with a variety of disciplinary approaches and perspectives; demonstrated ability to delegate, prioritize, and make transparent and effective decisions; facility with knowledge production, critical issues in higher education, and, in particular, national trends in art and design pedagogy and research; experience in cultivating external relationships; a record of fiduciary transparency and accountability; demonstrated competence in leading accreditation efforts; proven success in developing and implementing strategic plans; a practical and academic understanding of, and enthusiasm for, the role of art and design in culture

For best consideration, applications and nominations should be provided by January 27, 2017. An application should include a letter describing relevant experiences and interest in the position; curriculum vitae; and the names of five references with titles, addresses, business telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
