The UNC Adams School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean. The nation’s first public university, UNC-Chapel Hill ranks among the world’s leading research universities and is a member of the prestigious Association for American Universities (AAU). The UNC Adams School of Dentistry is ranked #2 globally by the Shanghai Ranking 2021 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects and received more than 1,400 individual applications for 82 spots in its current first-year D.D.S. class. The Dean will play a key leadership role in advancing the mission, operations, development and service of the school, which has a tradition of improving oral health through excellence in education, patient care, research, public service and engagement. 

The Dean of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. Appointments are reviewed every five years. The Dean plays a key leadership role in advancing the mission, operations, and service of the School, with complete responsibility for personnel, general administration, and management, budgetary, academic and development functions. 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
An earned terminal degree, record of exceptional leadership success, and evidence of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement is required.

Leadership: 

  • An established record of effective, strong and collaborative leadership; 
  • Ability to bring together students, faculty and staff across ethnic, disciplinary and other differences to pursue together an exciting future;
  • The courage and discipline to implement the changes that will be necessary to attain this future;
  • A commitment to developing and promoting shared governance between faculty and administration;
  • The capacity to formulate and articulate a shared vision, to persuade a wide range of audiences of its value and to engage others in its implementation;
  • Ability to recruit outstanding new faculty as well as retain the School’s strongest faculty, with specific experience engaging with, recruiting and retaining faculty members of diverse backgrounds; 
  • Interest in appointment, promotion and tenure procedures;
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others to strive continuously for academic excellence;
  • Demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary ethic;
  • Successful experience as a dean, associate dean, department chair, research center or institute director, or other major leadership role.

Academic Qualifications: 

  • Significant academic and scholarly credentials, including a passion for academic excellence; 
  • Credentials for appointment at the tenured Full Professor level. 

Intellectual Breadth: 

  • An appreciation of the wide range of disciplines represented in the School, and an ability and willingness to support the diverse missions of the School’s units;
  • A global perspective and a commitment to participating in the globalization of the School and the University. 

Focus on Students: 

  • Genuine understanding of the teaching mission and the importance of providing undergraduate and graduate students with the highest quality educational experience;
  • Must demonstrate and ensure commitment to and success of a diverse student body and its importance to the Dental profession.

Fundraising Ability: 

  • Demonstrated skill in generating philanthropic support from individuals, foundations and corporations, and a genuine interest in fundraising. 

Financial Management Experience: 

  • A record of strong operational leadership demonstrating excellence, growth and financial effectiveness;
  • Demonstrated experience in fiscal management. 

Accreditation: 

  • Familiarity with the accreditation process. 

Personal Qualities: 

  • Unquestioned, unassailable personal and academic integrity;
  • A commitment to the mission of a global public research university;
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a focus on openness and transparency;
  • Innovative and creative problem-solver, with a willingness to take risks; 
  • Ability to foster a collegial and respectful work and educational environment.
