Job Description Summary
The Computational Social Science Lab at Penn (CSSLab) is a new umbrella organization for the research initiatives of Duncan Watts, a PIK Professor affiliated with Wharton, SEAS, and Annenberg. The Center's goal is to bridge among the three aforementioned schools research, teaching, and practice in the rapidly emerging field of computational social science (CSS), and to establish Penn as a global leader and standard-setter in CSS.

The CSSLab will build an innovative user-friendly research infrastructure with high-quality data on phenomena of social importance from multiple providers, which implies a complex data collection and validation component. To promote mass collaboration in an open-science format among research teams from academy and industry, the Center needs to ensure secure but flexible access to these data. 

Reporting to the CSSLab's Executive Director, the Data Scientist will work closely with researchers, Operations Manager and Data Engineer on processing the Lab's data pipelines, ensuring their quality, creating and maintaining metadata, assisting researchers with project documentation and replications studies.

Job Description

The Data Scientist for the Computational Social Science Lab will:
 

  • Prepare the Lab's data pipelines for specific research projects 
     
  • Document data pipelines, create and maintain up-to-date metadata for all datasets
     
  • Design and implement data quality assurance processes; clean and validate data within project timelines
     
  • Audit the Lab's research repositories on GigHub; design and implement code writing standards 
     
  • Supervise the preparation of replication files, the conduct of replications studies, and development of dashboards
     
  • Supervise third party software developers of the Lab's data pipelines

    Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related fields and 3-5 years of work experience in data science, data-intensive research projects, collaboration with software developers; advanced working knowledge of Python; a subject matter expert in Natural Language Processing (NLP); working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, and familiarity with data architecture optimization in RDBMS; strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple complex tasks with diverse audiences and varying deadlines.

    In addition, we prefer a candidate with experience with AWS products, cloud-related technologies such as S3, EC2, EMR, IAM policies, Athena, Glue, and streaming technologies such as Kafka, Flink, or Spark Streaming.
