Job Description Summary
The Managing Director will provide administrative leadership for the Perelman School of Medicine's (PSOM) Palliative and Advanced Illness Research (PAIR) Center. The position reports directly to the Faculty Director of the PAIR Center with matrixed reporting to PSOM administration and the Chief Research Administrator of the DOM.
The Managing Director is responsible for ensuring that the programmatic and financial objectives of the Center are achieved. This individual will essentially function as the Chief of Staff to the Center Faculty Director for the PAIR Center's employees - currently 34 in number, expected to grow annually over the next 3 years. The Managing Director will have direct supervisory oversight of the following functions: 

  • Financial management of Center activity (sponsored programs, operating budget, gifts, endowments)
  • Hiring, training, and development of research staff and students
  • Research administration (regulatory compliance, reporting to sponsor, milestone completion)
  • Communications and Engagement 
  • Data management and data science
  • Space planning operations
  • Event planning and programmatic activities (Center educational series, visiting faculty, works in progress, training programs)
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives

    S/he will provide administrative oversight and strategic direction for the Center's signature initiatives, including the “Pitch An Idea for Research with the PAIR Center” (PAIR with PAIR) program and the Penn Roybal Center on Palliative Care in Dementia. Specifically, s/he will oversee pilot grants funded through these two initiatives and monitor study budgets. In collaboration with the Director of Portfolio Development, s/he will develop and release requests for proposals and guide the proposal review process for both programs. The Penn Roybal Center for Palliative Care in Dementia will also involve managing the relationship with implementation partner, Genesis Healthcare, convening and leading the Roybal Steering Committee, and planning an annual symposium with investigators and thought leaders from across the nation.

    S/he will work with the Senior Manager of Communications and Engagement to elevate the national profile of the PAIR Center. S/he will provide direction and guidance for the PAIR Center's communications and engagement strategies including, but not limited to, the annual report, the PAIR Center website, social and traditional media, local community advocacy, and partnership with national advocacy organizations. S/he will also support efforts to engage with potential donors in partnership with Penn Medicine Development. 
    The Managing Director will be responsible for building productive collaborative relationships within the Penn Medicine community including, but not limited to the Palliative Care Program; PSOM Human Resources; the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics; the Leonard Davis Institute; Penn Medicine Data Science; the Penn Memory Center; the UPHS Center for Healthcare Innovation; the School of Nursing; the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care; the Division of Renal, Electrolyte, and Hypertension; the Division of Hematology and Oncology; Penn Medicine Communications; and Development.
    As a member of the PAIR Center leadership team s/he will provide support for PAIR Center Advisory Board Meetings and other Center-wide events as needed. This position will report to Dr. Scott Halpern, the PAIR Center's Faculty Director. A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible managerial and leadership experience, preferably in an academic medicine environment, is required.

    POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING

    QUALIFICATIONS: (Qualifications should clearly indicate those that are required and those that are preferred.)

    Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible managerial and leadership experience, preferably in an academic medicine environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
