The office of University Counseling Services provides a diverse and multidisciplinary staff committed to the mission of providing student learning focused high quality psychological services, outreach, and training that foster the productive mental health and success of students while contributing to a safe, welcoming, and multi-culturally aware campus community. The Director of University Counseling Services reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of students and is responsible for providing leadership, vision and management direction for the office of University Counseling Services (UCS). The Director is responsible for program design and assessment, policy and procedure development, human resources administration, and fiscal accountability consistent with the mission, goals and priorities of the department, division, and university. Selects, supervises, and evaluates psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and other counselors who provide clinical, developmental, and/or educational services. The Director provides input, guidance and support to the retention, tenure and promotion processes for staff hired in Student Services Professional, Academically Related tenure-track positions. Serves as an institutional leader regarding the mental health and well-being of students and collaborates with other CSUN departments on programs, services, policy development and crisis response/management. Establishes consultative and collaborative relationships with members of the campus community and external communities in the furtherance of student personal and academic success. Maintains the Center as a venue for training of graduate students and interns in counseling theory and practice. Utilizes technology to enhance and expand the delivery of services. Shares in division leadership through the Student Affairs Management Council and the Student Affairs Leadership Team. Serves on divisional, university, and CSU system committees as appropriate. Assumes other duties as assigned.


Doctorate in counseling psychology or clinical psychology. Current California licensure as a psychologist or ability to attain licensure within one year of appointment. If currently licensed as a psychologist out of state, must become licensed in California within1.5 years after appointment. Six years of progressively responsible professional and administrative experience developing and delivering programs and services in a college counseling center, including at least three years in a leadership capacity. Demonstrated commitment and ability to advance diversity and inclusion, and work with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated knowledge of: student development theory in a mental health context; current counseling/psychotherapy practices and methods; effective strategies for responding to crisis situations, and effective mental health promotion strategies. Ability and specialized skills to: design and utilize appropriate instruments to determine efficacy of services and measure progress in attainment of goals and student learning outcomes; motivate and lead a diverse staff in the accomplishment of goals; effectively manage within a large complex organization, including supervision of a large staff and responsibility for planning, budgeting, and assessment and evaluation practices; and work constructively and collaboratively with faculty, staff and other agencies to deliver student services and achieve shared goals. Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills; ability to effectively make presentations before a variety of audiences. Evidence of creativity or innovation in the delivery of student mental health programs and services.
