Visiting Professor of Legal Writing / Visiting Assistant Professor

Visiting Professor of Legal Writing
Visiting Assistant Professor

Two-year term

The University of Maine School of Law, in the coastal city of Portland, Maine, invites applications for one full-time Visiting Professor of Legal Writing to teach one section of first-year students in our Legal Research, Analysis, and Communication (LRAC) I (fall) and II (spring) courses. This position is for a two-year term, starting in the 2022-2023 academic year. Successful candidates will be eligible to apply for a full-time, long-term position starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. Members of minority groups, women, and others whose background would contribute to the diversity of the Law School are encouraged to apply.

In the fall and spring semesters, the visiting professor will work collaboratively with two other LRAC professors to deliver a LRAC course that is fully coordinated across all three LRAC sections. The visiting professor would, however, be responsible for teaching that professor’s own section of 1L students.  Teaching duties will include in-class teaching and simulations, reviewing drafts and providing intensive written and oral feedback on assignments, meeting with students in individual conferences, holding office hours, grading assignments, and grading the final exam for students assigned to the professor’s section.  The visiting professor will also help to oversee several third-year legal writing teaching assistants. The position may require the visiting professor to engage in some service to the school, such as serving as a faculty advisor or on committees, and/or some administrative duties related to delivering the legal writing courses.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the annual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. The UMS is a recipient of the Wellness Councils of America’s Well Workplace Award and offers a wellness program.

Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled.  To ensure full consideration, we encourage applicants to submit materials by November 12, 2021. You may email any questions to mainelawsearch@maine.edu
