Dean

Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music

Bloomington, Indiana

Indiana University (IU) Bloomington invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Jacobs School of Music (Jacobs). As one of the world’s finest schools for the comprehensive study of music and dance, Jacobs seeks a leader with significant artistic talent and academic distinction, proven administrative skills, a strong record of community- and team-building, and an entrepreneurial spirit. The next Dean should be a collaborative leader who is comfortable making decisions and who brings the right balance of strategic and operational skills to capitalize on the school’s longstanding strengths and existing areas for growth, while collectively developing a forward-looking vision for Jacobs that positions the school for the future of music and performing arts.

Having just celebrated its centennial, Jacobs is at a pivotal moment in its history. Jacobs is one of the largest and most esteemed schools of music in the world. With a globally renowned faculty, caring and dedicated staff, highly engaged alumni, and gifted students from all 50 states and 70 countries, Jacobs is well positioned for the future. It boasts one of the world’s largest academic music libraries, has preeminent facilities and performance venues on a beautiful campus, and hosts more than 1,100 concerts each year. Its students have access to both an elite conservatory education and the world-class faculty, courses, and resources of one of the nation’s leading research universities. The school’s 175 full-time and 44 part-time faculty work across 21 departments, 3 centers, an institute, and a lab, providing the highest caliber education to the approximately 1,600 students and numerous non-majors from across the university who choose to take classes at Jacobs every year.

Leading the Jacobs community forward into its second century, the next Dean will be a unifying and inspiring presence who helps articulate a vision of excellence for the school that both respects tradition and inspires the school to new heights; facilitates communication within the school to foster a greater sense of community and shared endeavor; promotes interdisciplinary collaborations with the other schools and colleges at IU; engages external constituents to promote Jacobs regionally, nationally, and globally; advances the values of inclusion, equity, diversity, and justice; and stewards and creatively grows the school’s resources to ensure continued financial stability, while increasing student support and scholarships.

The successful candidate will have excellent academic and artistic credentials, experience managing complex organizations, a strong track record of fiscal prudence, an open and transparent communication style, enthusiasm for and success in fundraising, a genuine appreciation for the broad diversity of musical traditions, and an ability to identify and pursue innovative new opportunities and initiatives. In addition, the Dean will be a senior leader at the university and will join a collegial and collaborative group of decanal colleagues who oversee the 17 other schools on campus. The successful candidate should have a strong understanding of public university decision making and funding, as well as faculty governance, and the ability to collaborate closely with other performing arts organizations on campus.

IU has retained the national executive search firm Isaacson, Miller to assist in the recruitment of the next Dean of Jacobs. All applications, nominations, and inquiries should be submitted in confidence through the Isaacson, Miller website at http://www.imsearch.com/7984.
