The Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies is an interdisciplinary academic unit with a core mission to support teaching and research on all aspects of the Greek world and the broader Hellenic Mediterranean, from ancient times to the present. The academic community of the Seeger Center encompasses a broad range of disciplines and fields, with exceptional faculty strengths in the humanities and the social sciences, and has a global reach with an international network of collaborating scholars, alumni, and former fellows.
The research mission of the Seeger Center is served by several world-leading fellowship programs for postdoctoral and visiting scholars. Made possible by the Seeger Center, Princeton's Hellenic Collections attract researchers from around the world. The teaching mission of the Seeger Center is served by the Program in Hellenic Studies that offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate curricula and certificates. The Seeger Center provides support and multiple opportunities for Princeton faculty and students for on-site learning and research in Greece, in collaboration with their Greek counterparts. Directed, led and administered by the Seeger Center, the Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies is the University's unique academic outpost in Europe, with a mission to lead international institutional partnerships and sponsor collaborative scholarly networks. In the immediate years ahead, the Seeger Center is poised for substantial growth in faculty and curriculum, as well as new research initiatives on campus and at the Princeton Athens Center.
Overview of Position
The Executive Director for Administration, International Initiatives, and Public Engagement works closely with the Seeger Center Director to develop and implement policy, to craft strategic direction for the operation of the Seeger Center, to participate in short- and long-term planning for operations and activities, and to set up and supervise new academic initiatives at Princeton University and in Greece. While the Director, in consultation with the Seeger Trustees and the Seeger Center Executive Committee, establishes the academic and intellectual priorities and direction of the Seeger Center, the executive director operationalizes and implements the Director's vision to realize these plans.
As the senior administrator of the Seeger Center, the executive director plays a central role in serving the core mission and strategic goals of the Seeger Center. With expertise in international education, as well as high-level administrative experience and skills, the executive director brings to the position deep know-how of University structures and priorities, and provides administrative continuity and institutional memory at the Seeger Center. Drawing on national and international experience and best practices, the executive director designs and proposes alternate models, policies, funding mechanisms, and procedures for support of research in Hellenic Studies on campus and at the Princeton Athens Center, in order to serve the vision of the Director of the Seeger Center and the broader mission of the University. The executive director will play a central role in planning new research initiatives at Princeton and designing the next, post-pilot phase of the Princeton Athens Center, as envisioned in the strategic plan of the Seeger Center.
The executive director provides strategic direction and financial forecasting, participates in short- and long-term planning, negotiates contracts, drafts MOUs with Greek and other international partner institutions, and develops procedures to establish, publicize and monitor funding opportunities, as well as interdepartmental and inter-institutional collaborations. The executive director prepares activities reports and announcements, as necessary, and is responsible for communicating the mission of the Seeger Center to academic audiences and the broader public. The executive director proposes public service and DEI initiatives on the Princeton campus and in Greece.
The executive director has direct supervision of the Seeger Center Manager to whom they delegate the day-to-day management and operations of the Seeger Center, the Program in Hellenic Studies, and the Princeton Athens Center. The executive director is the primary contact with the Dean of the Faculty and Office of the Provost. The executive director is responsible for ensuring that Seeger Center faculty, students, research scholars, and staff have the necessary resources to carry out their academic, teaching, research, and administrative duties. The executive director supports the Director in fundraising, donor stewardship, and alumni relations, and in nurturing the international network of Hellenic Studies scholars, current and former affiliates. Following the vision and goals set by the Seeger Center Director, the executive director also has overall planning, financial, and administrative oversight of the Princeton Athens Center.
The executive director reports directly to the Seeger Center Director, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Academic Professionals, in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.
The three principal areas of responsibility of the executive director are: strategic and financial planning; academic administration; international initiatives and public engagement. In addition to the duties described above, the executive director:
- Works closely with the Seeger Center Director to develop and implement all planning priorities and strategic goals. Produces sophisticated, detailed financial reports for the Seeger Trustees and advisory committees. Supports the Director to manage the Seeger Center's relationships with external advisors and collaborators, partnering institutions, and other stakeholders, and to develop fundraising strategies in the U.S. and in Greece. Develops strategies and structures for innovative research projects and organizes funding mechanisms for the overall research mission of the Seeger Center.
- Under the guidance of the Director, the executive director supports the vision, mission and goals of the Princeton Athens Center, as well as all other international collaborations sponsored by the Seeger Center. Administers all international programming in Greece and the broader region. Travels for short-term on-site work to Greece, as needed. Administers directly one major Princeton Athens Center activity each year and, if appropriate, may lead a research or teaching activity in Greece. Oversees web site, publicity, social media, and outreach strategy, as well as the Seeger Center publications and translations subsidies programs. The executive director may be offered a modest research budget for their own projects directly related to Hellenic Studies.
- Represents the Seeger Center within the University by building effective relationships with campus partners, faculty and senior administrators. Supervises the Center Manager and the Communications Strategist. Hires and supervises the Princeton Athens Center Program Manager and other local staff in Greece. Continually examines and develops the overall organizational structure, anticipating future staff needs, adjusting duties and responsibilities as necessary, in consultation with the Center Manager.
- Advanced degree, Ph.D., or terminal professional degree (e.g., MBA or LLM)
- 6-10 years in senior administrative management or related position(s) in U.S. higher education and/or non-profit settings, nationally or internationally.
- The ideal candidate will have outstanding organizational and analytical skills; intellectual rigor and high academic standards; an international outlook for higher education; a proven commitment to academic administration; demonstrated ability to work with faculty and lead staff in a dynamic academic unit; and the capacity to leverage Seeger Center resources for Hellenic Studies to evolve, innovate, and serve its core mission and priorities, as set by the Director.
- Demonstrated experience in budget management and oversight of financial operations, including financial reporting. Analysis and forecasting skills (including excellent Excel skills); ability to focus on details and switch focus to high-level strategy.
- Knowledge of donor stewardship and fundraising practices.
- Effective leadership; demonstrated experience hiring, evaluating, and team leadership; ability to build, motivate, inspire, and lead a strong, effective, inclusive, diverse team.
- Superb communication skills, both orally and in writing, for internal and public communications.
- Familiarity with international education practices, opportunities and challenges, including financial, legal, risk management, and compliance issues.
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with multiple / competing deadlines.
- Experience with Princeton curriculum and academic units.
- Experience with board relations and/or committee management.
- Ph.D. in a humanities or social science discipline.
- Academic background in Hellenic Studies, including competence in Modern Greek.
- Teaching experience in higher education.
