Job Description  

The NeuroGeneRx Center within the Department of Neurology is seeking a registered nurse with licensure and in good standing to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to provide comprehensive professional nursing care in a clinical research environment. The Clinical Research Nurse C (CRN C) will be responsible for coordinating early phase clinical trials involving various sponsors and innovative nucleic acid-based therapies for Neurological diseases. This position functions as part of a multidisciplinary team and reports to the NeuroGeneRx Program Manager. This area of research requires dedicated attention and care to ensure subject safety and well-being. The successful candidate will comply with all policies relating to UPHS, JCAHO, ICH/GCP, FDA, HHS, and other regulatory standards.

Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Managing and coordinating some or all aspects of clinical trials throughout their entire lifecycle (start-up, protocol implementation, and closure). Providing input into the development of efficient work flows related to the studies.
  • Acting as a liaison to sponsors, patients and investigational teams. Developing and maintaining communication with the various clinical teams, including but not limited to pharmacy, radiology, neurosurgery, periop, advanced practitioners, neurology outpatient clinic and inpatient units, CHPS outpatient and inpatient nursing units, and laboratory. Providing in-service and support to clinical or CHPS staff, as appropriate. Providing ongoing service education updates to all investigators that have eligible participants for clinical research trials.
  • Preparing, collecting and submitting study regulatory documents to the sponsor and all applicable institutional committees (e.g. IRB, IBC, CTRC, CAMRIS, CACTIS, etc.) for initial approval, continuing reviews and for approval of any amendments.
  • Caring for subjects of all age groups from young adult through geriatrics in accordance with protocol requirements as well as clinical and research guidelines. Handling any questions subjects may have regarding protocol specifics, investigational products, lab results, effects of therapies, medications, and symptom management within level of expertise and referring other questions to the PI or medical team in order to obtain guidance or assistance.
  • Providing oversight and/or completing study evaluations, data collection, assessments, source documents and case report forms. Performing necessary screening and routine evaluations in clinical trials including phlebotomy, physical assessments, photography, EKGs, or others as indicated within required time frames and with attention to detail according to the protocol. Coordination will also include placing/releasing EPIC orders, administering or providing therapeutic agents and/or study interventions, as appropriate, documenting administration in EPIC, and transporting, processing and/or shipping biological samples.
  • Demonstrating vigilance in patient safety and protocol compliance. Reviewing all clinical and laboratory data and adverse events, reporting in real-time to the PI for assessment and review, and communicating with medical staff regarding protocol-specific management of toxicities and adverse events.
  • Participating in the conduct of audits by study sponsors, CROs, the FDA, the University of Pennsylvania, and other groups.
  • Participating in core study team and ongoing protocol training/compliance meetings. Participating in working groups within the research team that will maximize the efficiency and quality of research performed, including developing SOPs.
  • Providing coverage and support to other research nurses and coordinators to meet center staffing needs. Acting as a mentor to newly hired nurses, coordinators and research assistant.
  • Maintaining competency professionally and personally. Completing all necessary protocol specific trainings as well as required organizational trainings (Penn CRC, ACLS, CPR, PA RN licensure) and others as directed by the NeuroGeneRx Center or study-specific requirements.
  • Other responsibilities delegated as needed.



The CRN C will promote institutional values of patient and visitor satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy and respect for patients and their families, visitors and other employees. The CRN C will demonstrate competence in the assessment, treatment and care of patients, and is expected to exhibit a professional and compassionate demeanor in performance of responsibilities and to be unfailingly responsive to the needs of patients.

Work requires 40 hours per week, with on-site presence and interaction with research subjects and teams. Variable hours of duty on week days may be necessary to accommodate study protocol requirements. Some work-related responsibilities may occur outside of usual hours, and conference-related travel may be required.

The position is contingent on continued funding.

Qualifications  

REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree required and 2-4 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Registered Nurse; licensure in Commonwealth of PA without restriction or limitation.

PREFERRED: Specialty neuroscience nursing certification (CNRN) is preferred. Prior experience with industry-sponsored trials, early phase trials, gene and molecular therapies, regulatory/ethics reviews, phlebotomy and/or injection is preferred. The CRN C should be highly motivated and detail-oriented, have strong planning, organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing capabilities, and be capable of solving problems as they arise, but willing to seek help as appropriate to complete the work accurately and efficiently. The CRN C should have a strong ability to communicate with clinicians, researchers, sponsors, patients and families.
