Wharton External Affairs engages alumni and friends in meaningful, lifelong relationships with the Wharton School, sustaining and strengthening a culture of giving that creates positive impact among students and communities worldwide. Four External Affairs teams - Operations; Development; Alumni Relations; and Communications and Donor Relations - work collaboratively across the School and the University to secure philanthropic commitments that empower teaching and learning, research, and dynamic programs that comprise a leading global business education. The Senior Development Communications Writer is a member of the Development Communications group on the Donor Relations team and reports to the Senior Associate Director of Development Communications. Donor Relations includes multiple channels with staff focusing on respective interconnected areas, including: Stewardship - focusing on writing donor acknowledgments, reports, and leadership messaging to engage donors; Development Communications - focusing on composing custom proposals, booklets, program overviews, web assets, and other materials to promote fundraising; and Other Donor Relations - focusing on family engagement, campus project recognition, and other activities.

Job Description

A key contributor to positive fundraising outcomes for the Wharton School, the Senior Development Communications Writer will compose customized gift proposals and other donor-focused materials on behalf of External Affairs. These materials enable prospect managers to communicate philanthropic impact with prospective donors and advance gift conversations. In this role, you will apply your extraordinary persuasive writing skills, experience with adapting formats and style based on audience and context, and comfort with writing, editing, and formatting digital and print pieces. You will establish strong working relationships with colleagues across the University of Pennsylvania as partners in building, refining, and updating fundraising materials. The Senior Development Communications Writer will connect the past, present, and future by illuminating giving opportunities, with respect for the unique relationship each individual has with the School, connecting their areas of interest with funding opportunities that will have significant impact on the Wharton community.

Specific duties and activities are:

  • Lead writer for proposals, giving opportunities, and fundraising templates for donors considering major and principal gifts to the Wharton School.
  • Collaborating writer and editor for funding booklets, one-pagers, and giving web pages; proofreader for Donor Relations material.
  • Engage with gift officers to inform personalization of materials so that they best resonate with donors and project manage proposal review and approval process.
  • Partner with programs, centers, and initiatives across the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania to gather information needed to build and update compelling cases for support.
  • Develop original content for existing and new areas of fundraising focus.



Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred and 3 to 5 years of experience in development communications, grant-writing, and other fundraising writing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a specialization in persuasive writing.
  • Detail orientation, with an ability to personalize content and communicate outcomes in a clear, compelling manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interact with administrators and faculty and navigate a complex environment of stakeholders across the School and University.
  • Excellent project management and planning skills, with an acute ability to manage multiple deadlines and track activities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Ability to absorb and analyze information on a wide variety of complex topics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as effectively as a member of a team.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office applications. Comfort with both writing and designing content and operating in Microsoft Word.
  • Position will require a limited number of evening and weekend work and travel to staff alumni and donor events.
