SENIOR COORDINATOR AND EDITOR

Salary Range: $48,900 - $62,250 /year

 

The University Communications Strategy department establishes and guides communications content focused on advancing UC San Diego’s reputation of prestige and distinction as a leading global research university and academic medical center. UC San Diego Communication Strategists bring bold thinking and curiosity to lead the design and execution of nimble and data-driven content and print, digital and visual assets that accelerate achievement of the university’s short- and long-term strategic and operational objectives.

 

Employing best practices in research, planning, execution and measurement to monitor trends, attitudes and opportunities among the university’s key stakeholders, the University Communications Strategy department serves as key advisors to university leaders and the larger University Communications team to establish and facilitate thoughtful, interdisciplinary and cross-functional collaboration. The team is made up of six distinct functions: content development, creative design, operational support, digital strategy, social media strategy and web operations professionals who identify and leverage new tools to engage, inspire and galvanize key constituencies. The Communications Strategy team also operates Studio Ten 300, a state-of-the-art broadcast studio that links UC San Diego’s world-renowned faculty to a global audience.

 

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director and Editorial Director, the position coordinates a variety of communications strategy projects - print, digital, web, and video - and provides editorial support. Adjusts project management approach to a range of coordination needs comprising estimating costs; scheduling; monitoring progress, timeline, and budget; client and vendor relations; internal communication; problem solving; and maintaining records. Works with staff in project teams that include a combination of graphic designers, web developers, video producers and strategists for marketing and social media. Manages printing from estimating through delivery. Copyedits and proofreads print, web, and graphic content according to prescribed editorial style and standards (primarily "AP Stylebook" or "The Chicago Manual of Style").

 

Applies flexible leadership to drive multiple projects and campaigns with varying schedules, priorities and stakeholders to completion. Fosters collaboration and communication to find solutions under tight deadlines. Assists in resolving a wide range of issues in a changing environment. Serves as a strong facilitator and liaison to advance the mission and goals of the organization. Actively, deliberately and thoughtfully infuses inclusivity and diversity throughout university communications. Promotes a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion, respect and superior customer service to internal and external constituents.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training with minimum of three years of production coordination and/or editorial experience in a publication, marketing, higher education, or related organization.

• Working knowledge of marketing principles.

• Thorough knowledge of applicable publishing software applications. Skill to use Macintosh computer and related software/peripherals to assist in project management, tracking, and record-keeping; use word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and other related applications to facilitate project production and coordination; use the web to conduct research related to department activities and project production.

• Strong skills in originating and maintaining databases for desktop publishing and image storage.

• Strong skills to effectively produce visual materials that meet and satisfy the needs of the client. Ability to collaborate with a creative team to produce publications that reflect the quality of the university and adhere to established brand and editorial standards.

• Ability to handle small to large multiple projects simultaneously. Proven project management ability with skill to perform a number of different tasks simultaneously, to respond to inquiries rapidly, and move from one aspect of a project to another without sacrificing the detail involved in each.

• Strong skills in interpersonal communications to interact effectively with a variety of clients, support staff and vendors. Proven excellence in interpersonal relations with skill to work with a wide variety of university and off-campus personnel, using tact, diplomacy and discretion with emphasis on flexibility and professionalism and treating all with dignity, equity, inclusion and respect. Ability to foster the Principles of Community.

• Knowledge of the proper use of the English language. Knowledge of style guides (AP, Chicago) as they apply to language use and practice. Editorial skills to rewrite or recast copy that is ambiguous, unorganized or mechanically faulty.

• Ability to take initiative and work independently and cooperatively to assist in accomplishing goals and objectives of campaigns, programs, events, and issues. Demonstrated ability to contribute as a productive team member and accept supervisory decisions and direction with a positive outlook.
