ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, BLACK RESOURCE CENTER

Salary Range: $73,000 - $78,000 /year

 

As a unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Black Resource Center (BRC), provides a supportive campus community space for the Black experience at UC San Diego. The BRC is committed to intra-community diversity and the development of the whole person. The BRC seeks to promote scholarship, foster leadership, and cultivate community for student success through the collaborative effort and support of faculty, staff, and the broader UC San Diego community.

 

The Black Resource Center seeks to create and implement programs and services, while partnering cross-campus, to support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students. The BRC also seeks to provide a fulfilling and nurturing campus experience for all who self-identify within the African Diaspora and global Black context.

 

Under the general direction of the Black Resource Center (BRC) Director, the Associate Director provides leadership, guidance, and oversight in support of the mission of the BRC. The Associate Director assists in the oversight of departmental processes and procedures, and manages of the Center's developmental programs.

 

The Associate Director is responsible for the overall administration and management of the BRC’s high impact programs, focused on improving Black students' sense of belonging and experience, while developing their academic self-concept, social agency as scholars, and general preparedness for success in graduate school and/or their chosen career. Independently develops and administers complex programs, including program curriculum development, to provide holistic services, set goals and objectives, and build intentional partnerships to ensure the ease of student access to resources and success of programmatic outcomes.

 

The BRC Associate Director independently develops and implements initiatives to improve outcomes related to the recruitment, development, enrichment, inclusion, retention and experience of Black students in all disciplines across the University. Oversees administration and management of the graduate student assistantship program, including recruitment, selection, training and supervision of graduate student staff. Provides training, guidance, and oversight of the BRC's student staff who are assigned to the BRC’s high impact programs.

 

Programs and services under purview align with and advance UC San Diego’s Black Academic Excellence Initiative, and are designed to facilitate the holistic development of Black identified students. Programs increase access to research, mentorship, and internships, and provide culturally grounded and affirming graduate/professional school and career preparation. The Associate Director manages and ensures the most complex and sensitive student development issues within the BRC programs are prioritized and resolved.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and experience working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities and first-generation college students. Expertise with student development is required to conceptualize and implement academic support services for underrepresented students.

• Advanced knowledge and understanding of the experience of Black identified students in higher education. Strong familiarity with best practices and scholarly research focused on supporting Black identified students.

• Thorough knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion including an understanding of the historical and social context of diversity, equity and inclusion, and of the intersections of identities including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual-orientation, religious, and class background, and thorough understanding of the BRC mission.

• Knowledge of academic curricula, as well as improving organizational climate and culture. Ability to develop curricula with the sound understanding of the role of performance-based assessment in student development. Proven ability to teach and provide feedback and input on design and implementation of training activities.

• Demonstrated ability to design, develop, plan, and implement student-peer counseling activities for individuals and groups.

• Supervisory Skills: Experience and skill to routinely monitor production and quality of work being produced by student staff, and set performance standards, observe behavior, provide objective feedback, provide counseling, and implement corrective action as needed. Mediate disputes or otherwise help to resolve conflicts, and provide effective leadership/coaching/mentoring/teaching; Experience and skill assessing staff capabilities and workloads, and redistributing when necessary; demonstrated experience and skill teaching/training staff in all aspects of job duties/responsibilities.

• Progressive leadership experience in a complex organization, including student facing experience.

• Demonstrated background in educational program development including experience in diversity training development and facilitation, working with college level faculty, working with graduate students, and educational background focused on diversity and/or social justice issues.

• Advanced knowledge of research methodologies and research designs. Advanced knowledge across a wide range of academic disciplines and epistemologies. Knowledge of the scientific process and pro-Black, anti-racist, and de-colonial methodologies. Knowledge of the research and theoretical perspectives on the various factors affecting Black student learning, experience, achievement, retention, and preparation for post-graduation.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

• Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form will be required.
