Director, Division of Music

The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University invites nominations and applications for a faculty position that includes service as the Director of the Division of Music. Successful candidates will demonstrate a record of distinction in one of the disciplines offered by the Division of Music in addition to significant leadership and management experience. Vision, integrity, communication and faculty development are essential for success in the role. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. The candidate selected will be expected to be a significant partner in connecting the Division with an increasingly diverse and globally-connected community at SMU and in the DFW Metroplex. While an appointment at a senior rank with tenure is anticipated, extraordinary candidates may be considered at any rank.

Leadership and management skills may be demonstrated in the form of higher education administration, in management of professional music ensembles, and/or in the music business or musical theatre business.  A distinguished record of accomplishment in one or more of the following areas is expected: 1) performance or conducting solo, chamber, choral, orchestral, band, opera, or musical theatre; 2) academic scholarship with broad exposure to current trends in the music industry and world culture; 3) executive leadership in the music business with knowledge of the classical music industry in addition to other genres.

Minimum: masters degree in (or professional equivalent); ten years professional performance/academic/business experience. Preferred qualifications include a record of excellence and innovation in instructional activities at the university level; successful experience leading a diverse team of faculty and/or professionals, or managing a professional ensemble; strong entrepreneurial, outreach, and communication skills. Qualifications will determine rank and compensation.
