Summary of Position

The Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems (ANFS), in the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, seeks candidates for a full-time (9 month) tenure track assistant professor of nutritional sciences position. We seek to expand our department’s strengths in human nutrition research for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. The research conducted by the ideal candidate focuses on modifying human dietary behaviors or elucidating the effects of eating patterns on human health. Candidates with expertise in nutrition interventions are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with an interest in connecting research findings to improving food policy and food systems. The new faculty member will have opportunities to collaborate with multiple organizations at the University of New Hampshire including Cooperative Extension, the Carsey School of Public Policy, the Sustainability Institute, and the New Hampshire Agricultural Experimental Station.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a productive, internationally recognized, and externally funded research program that works collaboratively across disciplines. They will provide vibrant, high-quality instruction for undergraduate and graduate courses in topics related to their expertise and the needs of the department in areas such as community nutrition, behavioral nutrition, and lifecycle nutrition. In addition, the candidate will provide excellent training and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in the department.

The Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems (ANFS) (http://colsa.unh.edu/anfs) currently serves undergraduate majors through its Nutrition,  Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems, Animal Science, and Equine Studies programs as well as graduate students and dietetic interns through a variety of departmental and college-wide programs. The Nutrition Program offers three undergraduate options within the major and serves approximately 200 students. Graduate offerings include thesis-based masters and doctoral programs, a combined master’s with dietetic internship, an accelerated 3+2 BS/MS program, as well as a graduate certificate in dietetics.

Current ANFS faculty research areas include human-gut microbiome interaction, nutritional epidemiology, as well as agroecology and food systems, and plant breeding, physiology, pathology, and dairy cattle production nutrition. A number of campus-based programs support junior faculty development including grantsmanship workshops, mentorship, and internal funding from the Research Office, Office of Engagement and Faculty Development, Center of Integrated Biomedical and Bioengineering Research (CIBBR), and the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station. We are a vibrant, interdisciplinary department, well-positioned to engage in cross-disciplinary research and teaching at the interface of the food system and human health. This position is foundationally important to a growing program in Nutritional Sciences. Acceptable Minimum Qualifications    

  • A Doctoral degree in nutrition or related discipline.
  • A record of research with a clear trajectory of successful scholarship that aligns with the position description and complements existing expertise within the department and College of Life Science and Agriculture.
  • Demonstrated potential for extramural funding.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the integrated teaching, research, and service component of UNH’s land-grant mission and the trans-disciplinary alignment of agriculture, nutrition, and food systems science in higher education.

Additional Preferred Qualifications     

  • Postdoctoral training.
  • Teaching and/or advising experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
