California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks nominations and applications for the next Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences.
The College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences (CHABSS) is the largest and most intellectually diverse college at CSUSM and plays a vital role in enabling the University to achieve its mission of delivering exceptional education and scholarship and ensuring success for all students. CHABSS offers a broad array of programs, rooted in the liberal arts tradition, responsive to new ideas and challenges, and attuned to the diversity of the human experience; in addition, it also contributes richly to CSUSM’s general education program. Grounded in the scholarly and creative activity of CHABSS faculty, departments and programs are dedicated to preparing students for lifelong careers of leadership, learning, creativity, professional achievement, and community service.
The Dean will join CSUSM at a transformative time. The campus will soon finalize a new strategic plan, charting a course for the next five years of growth, innovation, and impact for CSUSM’s remarkably diverse student body. The Dean of CHABSS will inherit a dynamic college and a community eager for steady leadership through this next stage of evolution. CSUSM seeks an exceptional, collaborative academic leader who can provide cohesive and forward-looking leadership, inspire the CHABSS community, advocate for its vital needs internally and externally, and deepen the College’s relationships across CSUSM and in the community. The Dean will be a master communicator, with a capacity to engage in difficult dialogues and creative conflict. The Dean will also be driven by a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will champion the University’s mission of student success.
Since its founding in 1989 as the California State University’s 20th campus, California State University San Marcos has grown to serve over 17,000 students across its 43 undergraduate and 24 graduate programs. A comprehensive public university offering diverse academic programs, the campus prides itself on exemplary teaching, innovative and experiential curricula, and the application of new technologies to solve real problems. A national model for student access and success, more than 50 percent of CSUSM graduates are the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree. The student body is extraordinarily diverse and proudly reflective of its surrounding community. CSUSM is designated as both an Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). Additionally, the University enrolls more Native American students per capita than any other California State University (CSU) campus. According to the University’s mission statement, “CSUSM grounds its mission in the public trust, alignment with regional needs, and sustained enrichment of the intellectual, civic, economic, and cultural life of the region and state.”
