San Francisco State University, Department of Child and Adolescent Development (CAD) offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Child and Youth Development in Community Settings beginning August 2022. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests are grounded in social and racial justice and include child and youth development in broad contexts. This can include, but is not limited to: knowledge and experience in school systems, health and social services, or community-based programs that serve children, adolescents, emerging adults, and their families. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic community/department/program.

 

The CAD Department started as an interdisciplinary academic program in Fall 1998 and became a stand-alone academic department in the College of Health & Social Sciences in 2008. We have a highly diverse enrollment of approximately 800 students (50% underrepresented minorities), with an impressive 35% going on to pursue post-baccalaureate graduate programs (double the university average). Through a social justice lens, CAD values teaching and experiential learning that incorporates diversity of background and experiences, current and relevant research, and high-quality instruction. The CAD curriculum is designed to ensure that diversity and cultural issues are a strong and continuing theme throughout the core coursework, which prepares students to be competent professionals in their work as advocates for children, youth, and families. Our emphasis on creating a diverse workforce with a high level of knowledge and competency applies to all three concentrations (i.e., Early Childhood, School Age Child and Family, and Youth Work and Out of School Time). We actively engage with our stakeholders to ensure the CAD major is meeting the needs of students, the community, and professionals in the field.

Responsibilities: The position requires undergraduate teaching in child and adolescent development, mentoring and advising undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing scholarship program in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Human Development, Child Development, Education, or a closely related field. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

 

Preferred:

  • Record of teaching contributions in the areas of: child and adolescent development, research methods, and supervision of interns.
  • Active record of scholarship related to specialty area, and evidence of external support or the potential for external funding of these activities.
  • Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under- represented communities

 

Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
