Hiram College

Founded in 1850, Hiram College is a liberal arts college with a proud heritage of educational innovation and excellence. Hiram was established in the mid-nineteenth century as a preparatory institution of high grade called the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute. The Institute was founded by the Disciples of Christ and located in Hiram, Ohio, because the founders believed this area of the Western Reserve to be “healthful and free of distractions.” Since the College’s first days, it has been nonsectarian and coeducational, and throughout its existence it has sustained this egalitarian tradition of educating men and women from diverse backgrounds. The institute’s original charter was authorized by the state legislature on March 1, 1850, and modified in 1867 to recognize the institution’s new collegiate rank when it became Hiram College.

As of 2021, traditional student enrollment is 976 with students coming from 35 states and 5 foreign countries. Hiram College is home to 65 full-time faculty of which 88 percent hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in their field. 32 academic majors, 38 minors, and 7 pre-professional programs are offered as areas of study. Hiram College also offers dual degree plans with Case Western Reserve University and Washington University in St. Louis and is affiliated with the Washington Center, a Washington D.C.-based independent nonprofit organization, that offers academic seminars and internship opportunities.

Hiram’s 110-acre campus is lined with red brick buildings and located in Hiram, OH. Located three miles from campus is Hiram’s 500+ acre biology field research station. The college also maintains an off-site field station called Northwoods, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is home to 18 intercollegiate varsity sports for men and women and is a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference in the NCAA’s Division III.  Roughly 45% of Hiram undergraduates, including Nursing majors, are student-athletes.

Nursing Education

Hiram College educates future nurses to be compassionate caregivers who are clinically competent, ethically grounded and socially and culturally responsible. Hiram nursing students train on campus and off, in facilities and clinical environments that are known to be some of the best in the country.

The B.S.N. nursing program includes both a major in nursing and a minor in biomedical humanities that results in a distinct, academically comprehensive program of study, with the goal of educating a new generation of professional nurses with an education embedded in both the liberal arts and the discipline of nursing. In addition to didactic instruction in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and nursing, the program of study includes laboratory and simulation experiences, and study abroad opportunities. It also includes clinical practicum and role-development experiences in a variety of health care settings, including acute care facilities, community and specialty hospitals, long-term care facilities and ambulatory and community health agencies throughout Northeast Ohio.
