Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Community Engagement Librarian, the Community Engagement Assistant supports the Penn Libraries' outreach efforts to support children's literacy and adult literacy programming in the city of Philadelphia and beyond. The position supports the development, planning and coordinating of various initiatives with partnering schools and organizations. Additionally, they will play a large role in managing the work study program, fostering relationships with various groups on campus, and maintaining and growing social media pages. School libraries and partner program collaborations and tasks will be assigned by the Community Engagement Librarian.

This is a twenty-hour per week position with some travel required between assigned local Philly schools, community meetings, and Penn Libraries.

Duties

 

 

  • Assist with supervising and coordinating schedules of work-study student team and provide support & feedback in ongoing assigned tasks
  • Take a lead role in maintaining and further developing communication channels (social media & newsletter).
  • Work with the Community Engagement Librarian to organize visits to public school libraries to assess progress and implementation of catalog system
  • Assist the Community Engagement Librarian in training public school staff and students in the use of the ILS
  • Assist in forming and maintaining partnerships with adult education programs in the community as well as with other community and university organizations
  • Coordinate engagement between Penn Libraries, community partners, & college students in order to work together to increase access to resources as well as highlight the field of library science
  • Perform additional duties as required

Preferred:

 

 

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and/or experience working in a library or educational environment.
  • Experience supporting literacy programming for elementary and high school students
  • Design experience as well as experience in running and maintaining social media accounts
