Associate Professor – Ontario Archaeology

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in anthropological archaeology with a focus on Ontario Archaeology. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, and will commence on July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Anthropological Archaeology or a related area by the date of appointment with a demonstrated exceptional record of research and teaching. We seek a scholar with an innovative research program in Northeastern North American Archaeology with an established and ongoing field program based in Ontario focused on pre-contact Indigenous history. Candidates must have a significant track-record of research and professional work that engages in strong partnerships of collaborative/collective knowledge building with Indigenous communities from this region and must integrate Indigenous knowledge/Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous methodologies in their research and teaching.  

Applicants must have a track record of leadership in support of Indigenous work in archaeology, and in regional professional archaeological organizations. The successful applicant must demonstrate excellence in research at an internationally competitive caliber, as shown by publications in leading journals in the field, a sustained record of external funding to support research, presentations at significant conferences, accolades or awards, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. Excellence in teaching can be demonstrated through a strong statement of teaching philosophy, teaching accomplishments, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations. Research and teaching evidence of excellence demonstrating significant partnerships with Indigenous communities, such as community-based participatory research (CBPR) involving Indigenous groups or Indigenous community-oriented training to share archaeological methodology, is required.

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
