Job Description Summary
The Information Security & Unix Systems (ISUS) group at the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) seeks a Devops Engineer with Linux systems experience who enjoys working on real-world faculty research and has a passion for developing solutions with new technologies. This position writes and maintains code that streamlines deployment, performance monitoring, and security audits of our projects in AWS. Our team is replacing legacy Linux systems with native AWS solutions, so the Devops Engineer must be able to navigate and manipulate data and services on those systems.

Job Description

DUTIES:

We are looking to hire at the level of Systems Administrator or Sr. Systems Administrator. For a hire at the Systems Administrator level, the Devops Engineer will perform Linux systems programming work and build new services in AWS based on templates developed by our senior technologists. They will also propose new templates and functionality where appropriate. They will be responsible for maintaining backups and alerting systems, and will contribute to system security design and incident response. They will work with change management tools to implement changes across multiple systems. They monitor and manage system performance, and lead individual projects and serve as subject matter expert on some technologies.

For a hire at the Sr. Systems Administrator level, the Devops Engineer will meet directly with faculty and staff to gather requirements for computing services. They will establish cloud services configuration or server/app configuration as appropriate. They will design system security and incident response procedures including the use of host-based firewalls and VPC. They will develop scripts for use across systems, and modify and improve change management processes. The Sr. Systems Administrator/Devops Engineer will implement interfaces among services, plan update/upgrade strategy, implement secure data stores, and manage system performance in response to changing environments and usage patterns. They will lead multiple server projects and serve as subject matter expert on multiple technologies

The Systems Administrator/Sr. Systems Administrator should be a person who strives to automate routine tasks using bash and python and work in a collaborative environment where communication is key to sharing knowledge and making system improvements. They should enjoy working on a team where they provide assistance to first-tier support staff who support end-users on our systems, as well as providing technical consulting and end-user Linux support.

This position is part of a larger team of Linux system administrators who also design and manage on-premises HPC systems for compute-intensive research, and participates in the ISUS on-call rotation. This includes basic system-level support and hardware health monitoring for on-premises HPC clusters as well as on-call support for all systems supported by the ISUS team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Systems Administrator:

Bachelor's Degree and at least 2 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

The successful candidate has Linux systems programming skills and a working knowledge of AWS services, especially EC2, S3, IAM, and CloudFront.

They work collaboratively with faculty, graduate students, research staff, and their SAS Computing colleagues. They are passionate about the research and academic mission of SAS; they are ready to make a difference through teamwork, ingenuity, and the power of open source.

Experience with Python, Bash, and Git is strongly preferred. Interest or experience in application development or full-stack engineering is a plus.

The expected salary range for the Systems Administrator position is $50,684 to $94,538.

Sr. Systems Administrator:

Bachelor's Degree and at least 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

The successful candidate has advanced linux systems programming skills and a working knowledge of AWS services, especially EC2, S3, IAM, and CloudFront.

They work collaboratively with faculty, graduate students, research staff, and their SAS Computing colleagues. They are passionate about the research and academic mission of SAS; they are ready to make a difference through teamwork, ingenuity, and the power of open source.

They can manage and track a large number of ongoing projects simultaneously, working with their teammates to triage problems and execute solutions.

Experience with Python, Bash, and Git is strongly preferred. Interest or experience in application development or full-stack engineering is a plus.

The expected salary range for the Sr. Systems Administrator position is $59,703 to $114,270.
