Associate Director for Clinical Programs, O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center

University of Alabama at Birmingham

The Department of Medicine (DOM) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center (O’Neal) welcomes applications and nominations for the next Director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology and Associate Director for Clinical Programs at the O’Neal. Among the nation’s leading academic health sciences centers and #27 in cancer care, UAB and the O’Neal are committed to further elevating its cancer care and research in national prominence. The UAB Health System has committed to building a new $400M free standing Cancer Hospital to open by 2028; the conditions are ideal for the next Director of Hematology and Oncology to further elevate the Division.

Over the past six years, the Division has more than doubled its number of faculty, developed nationally recognized research programs, and has enhanced and grown its fellowships. Division faculty have focused strengths in adult hematology and oncology, basic sciences, experimental therapeutics, and outcomes research—particularly in underrepresented communities. Clinically, the Division is primarily responsible for the hematology and oncology units of the medical service in University Hospital, consultations for the entire Medical Center, a Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Center, and a fully accredited Blood and Marrow Cellular Transplantation Program

The Division is central to the Department of Medicine, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the UAB Cancer Service Line. The new Division Director will be a visionary, accomplished, leader with demonstrated accomplishments in translational research ideally relevant to adult oncology. The Director is responsible for all clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Division and must be comfortable setting strategy and building the Division’s culture of excellence and inclusiveness across all missions. Highly developed interpersonal skills are essential in navigating a complex, matrixed environment. To be successful, the Director must work collaboratively across the diverse internal organizations within the UAB School of Medicine and UAB Health System, in addition to advancing the Division’s mission with community providers and leads, as well as donors.

The Division is integral to the O’Neal, one of the first Cancer Centers to be designated by the NCI in 1972 and continuously funded since. The Director has a key leadership position in the O’Neal Cancer Service Line (CSL), which provides multidisciplinary cancer care and cancer clinical trials at the O’Neal and affiliates throughout the state. As the O’Neal Associate Director for Clinical Programs this individual will join the O’Neal’s CSL central governing body along with four others, including the UAB Health System Vice President for Cancer, the O’Neal Director, and the O’Neal CSL Directors of Clinical Affairs and the Cancer Network. This body has full administrative and budgetary authority over cancer care provided by the service line. As such, the incumbent will have influence and authority over the strategic direction and provision of cancer care for the service line and its affiliates, a purview unmatched by any other cancer clinical care leader within the enterprise.

The Director must foster an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion as central to academic productivity and meeting the clinical service needs of the UAB Cancer Service Line and the UAB health system. The Director must be passionate about mentoring and developing faculty and fellows, and able to grow the Division through strategic recruitment to expand the areas of oncology, hematology, and bone marrow transplantation, with these values front of mind.
