The Sustainability Institute is seeking candidates for a program assistant role.

The Institute administers the award-winning Sustainable Jersey Certification Program and numerous federal and state grant-funded projects. Our mission is to empower New Jersey communities to build a better world for future generations with the tools, training, and financial incentives necessary to pursue critical sustainability initiatives. We work municipalities and K-12 public schools across the state to identify and pursue best practices aimed at addressing current and future issues and challenges such as climate and energy, social justice, natural resources protection, waste management, health and many more. A successful candidate will be a quick and eager learner interested in supporting our mission and finds fulfillment in collaborating with others to create media and communications that enhance our image and meet the needs of our various target audiences. This includes but is not limited to email and social media marketing; website content creation and management; maintenance of our YouTube channels; and assisting with other core operation functions.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating content from staff to produce a weekly eblast to program participants, maintaining mailing lists, and tracking response rates.
  • Creating webpages and updating content and images on the Sustainable Jersey municipal and schools program websites based on content provided by other staff.
  • Editing video content and managing our municipal and schools YouTube channels
  • Supporting the organization's social media efforts including account administration and creating and posting content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of the organization’s media and communications activities and offering suggestions for improvements.
  • Supporting the administration of the certification programs.     

  Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in marketing, communications, graphic design, or related field.
  • One year of relevant work, internships, or volunteer experience related to media and communications functions aimed at communicating program content or promoting organizational activities. This includes using email marketing applications such as Constant Contact or MailChimp and social media tools to promote programs and events, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Knowledge of and experience with website content management applications such as Typo3, Word Press, PHP, and HTML.
  • Solid computer skills, including Google drive, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office Suite, Acrobat Professional, and Google website analytics. Ability to create simple graphics and edit photos and videos using applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Canva, iMovie, and the Mac Photos app. Familiarity with using virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom, GoTo Webinar, or WebEx.
  • Quick and eager learner who is tech savvy, takes direction well, highly organized with the ability to work independently and as a team, balance multiple priorities, problem-solve, and assume responsibilities to meet the needs of the organization.      

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with minor or significant course work in graphic design and communications.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental and social justice issues through course work or volunteer, job, or personal experiences.
