General Purpose:  The Yale School of the Environment (YSE) is a graduate and professional school with a mission to create and provide knowledge and leadership for a sustainable future. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a dotted line to the Dean, the Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion leads ongoing efforts and envisions new directions for growth at YSE in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Assistant Dean will support efforts to further the School’s mission to be an organization that is relevant, inclusive, and responsive to all people ensuring that we can think, act, and engage most effectively with the wide breadth of environmental challenges. The Assistant Dean will provide leadership and vision, administration, coordination, and budgetary/financial tracking of the Office of DEI. The Office of DEI engages with graduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The Assistant Dean of DEI will also work closely with leadership from other teams at the School, including but not limited to: Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Doctoral Studies, Faculty Affairs, Enrollment Management, Career Development, the Research Office, Development and Alumni Affairs, and Strategic Communications to coordinate support for students, alumni, staff, and faculty. The incumbent will collaborate with key partners across the university and externally. The Assistant Dean for DEI will supervise a professional staff member dedicated to supporting work in this area, as well as student assistants.

The Assistant Dean will lead efforts to (1) infuse core values of diversity, inclusion and equity into the education, research, practice, and outreach activities of the School; and (2) promote a cohesive community within the School around its strategic mission and goals. The Assistant Dean will also work with other leadership teams help to (1) conduct develop the Schools DEI strategic plan; (2) increase the diversity of students, staff, and faculty as it relates to recruitment and retention; and (3) facilitate efforts to develop and operate diversity pipeline programs.

Required Education and Experience:  1. Master’s degree with at least eight years of related experience in environment, conservation, natural resources, sustainability, or related fields of studies.2. Understanding of and experience with institutional diversity.3. Strong oral and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.4. Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with a diverse group of constituents.5. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex processes and projects. 6. High level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and other web-based tools.7. Must be able to travel; some evenings and weekends may be required.8. Must have valid driver’s license at the start of appointment.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex processes and projects.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other web-based tools.
  • Ability to travel; some evenings and weekends may be required. Valid driver’s license at the start of appointment.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Masters degree with at least eight years of related experience in environment, conservation, natural resources, sustainability, or related fields of studies.
