Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)—an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university with the mission to advance knowledge and educate students in engineering, science, humanities, arts and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century—invites applications and nominations for the role of Associate Dean for Residential Life (ADRL).
Reporting directly to and serving as a key advisor to the Senior Associate Dean for Residential Education, the ADRL leads a team of talented and dedicated residential life professionals and collaborates with diverse campus partners to create the conditions for undergraduate students to have meaningful and enriching experiences. Responsible for providing strategic direction for MIT’s Undergraduate Residential Life (URL) initiatives, the ADRL works in partnership with the House Teams to support them in their work with undergraduate students; directly supervises and creates intentional professional development opportunities for the live-in Assistant Director/Area Director staff; offers continuing education opportunities for Graduate Resident Advisors and Resident Peer Mentors; develops meaningful relationships with the faculty Heads of House, student leaders, and other staff to advance key conversations and initiatives across the residences; champions the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in all URL activities; and provides the tools and resources for each residence to enhance its sense of community, all with an eye toward promoting student success, development, and wellbeing.
The undergraduate residential system at MIT benefits from a distinctive model of shared governance that brings together faculty, students, and staff. This system has led to the 11 residences having unique histories, cultures, traditions, and personalities that are treasured by current students and alumni alike. The successful candidate will embrace this storied history, seeking to understand all that makes each residence unique in order to determine how different programs, policies, and initiatives might need to be tailored to each residence. The ADRL will not exercise authority over the residences, but will develop meaningful relationships with key constituents in order to lead by influence.
The successful candidate will be a strong general manager with demonstrated skills in both change management and crisis management. This individual will not only be an effective leader for URL, but will also be an advocate for all members of the residential community, articulating and communicating concerns with senior leadership in the Division of Student Life. The successful candidate will be an experienced and innovative leader who seeks to identify challenges and tackle them head on in collaboration with other institutional partners. This is a prime opportunity for an individual to make their mark on an institution with a deep commitment to student engagement and success.
MIT has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment of its next ADRL.
