To enrich education through diversity, TCNJ is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The institution has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence and to achieving diversity among faculty and staff. The Chronicle of Higher Education has placed TCNJ on its honor roll of “Great Colleges to Work For.” TCNJ has been a recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE grant, supporting the careers of women faculty members in STEM disciplines. We strongly encourage a host of diverse, intersectional populations and cultures to apply including, but not limited to, identities based on race, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, and veteran status. We also encourage applications from candidates with a wide range of professional and personal paths. Each candidate is invited to discuss their unique pathway in their application materials.

The Department of Chemistry at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 10-month, non-tenure-track faculty position starting August 2021. TCNJ is the proud recipient of an Inclusive Excellence grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), which supports our work to provide access and foster success for all students studying science and math, especially those traditionally underserved by STEM and higher education. TCNJ’s Division of Inclusive Excellence, https://diversity.tcnj.edu, houses several faculty and staff affinity groups including the Minority Executive Council, Women’s Professional Network, Parenting Network, LGBTQ+ Pride, and Multicultural Greek Affinity Group. We invite applicants from all areas of Chemistry, who are committed to high-quality teaching, deep student engagement, and who have a strong commitment to teaching pedagogies which promote equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Each course section typically includes 24 to 48 students in the “active learning classroom” and no more than 24 students in each “laboratory.” The Department of Chemistry seeks a candidate to teach in this curriculum and serve as a coordinator of General Chemistry. The Lecturer facilitates communication among instructors and works to provide equitable standards of learning and assessment for students across all course sections. The Lecturer’s responsibilities include onboarding new instructors, providing ongoing support to the General Chemistry faculty, and working with the laboratory manager, instrumentation specialist, and other campus partners in teaching and learning.

The successful candidate will be able to teach General Chemistry I and II and will have excellent organizational and communication skills. The ability to also teach Organic Chemistry courses is desirable but not required. The successful candidate will have a doctorate or master’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related field. The candidate will also have demonstrated excellence in teaching, including prior experience teaching college-level General Chemistry, both lecture and laboratory.

Department of Chemistry

Chemistry Department has 16 full-time faculty members, 13 of whom are tenure-track, and approximately 120 majors. We occupy a newly expanded and renovated Chemistry Building, which is part of TCNJ’s six-building STEM Complex, providing tremendous opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The Chemistry Department offers state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities with extensive instrumentation (see: https://science.tcnj.edu/about/facilities-labs/).

TCNJ’s Department of Chemistry offers the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry as its only degree with specializations in Biochemistry, Materials Chemistry, and Secondary Education. It ranks in the top 10% nationally in the number of American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degrees earned. Over 80% of our majors participate in one or more semesters of research with a Chemistry faculty member. Among all public colleges and universities, TCNJ ranks first in the nation for the percentage of its undergraduates who go on to earn Ph.D.'s in Chemistry. In the past five years, the department was awarded over $3 million in external grants and has produced 48 peer-reviewed papers or book chapters.  TCNJ and the Trenton ACS local section will host the ACS Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) in 2022. About TCNJ

Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a selective, public, primarily undergraduate institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. TCNJ emphasizes the residential experience for our approximately 7,000 undergraduate students, 30% of whom are self-described as members of groups traditionally underrepresented in academe and STEM. Students benefit from a 13-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and an average class size of 21 students, which has led to TCNJ attaining a first-year to sophomore retention rate of 94% and a graduation rate of 86%. TCNJ has also received national recognition for the adoption and promotion of the teacher-scholar model for our faculty and deep engagement of our undergraduates in research. TCNJ was awarded the inaugural “Campus-wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishment” from the Council on Undergraduate Research in 2015. TCNJ was awarded, in 2006, a Phi Beta Kappa chapter—an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and universities nationally. A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ’s seven schools—Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science; and Science. TCNJ is located within an hour of New York City and Philadelphia. The College’s campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township and is known for its natural beauty.
