The R. Barbara Gitenstein Library at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a temporary, one-year Education Librarian position.
Summary of Responsibilities
Provides library services to TCNJ students and faculty, particularly in the School of Education. Services include user education, subject-specialized and general reference, and collection development and management of education-related library resources. Reports to the Dean of the Library. Negotiable position: may be FT or PT. Some evening and weekend duties required.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as liaison to all departments in the School of Education—Elementary and Early Childhood Education; Special Education, Language and Literacy; Educational Administration and Secondary Education; and Counselor Education—and possibly to the Department of Health and Exercise Science (in the School of Nursing, Health and Exercise Science). Provide all necessary library support for these academic programs.
User Education: Initiate and provide instructional programs targeting students and faculty in the above-named departments. Provide individual and small-group consultation/instruction regarding education and health and exercise science resources. Participate in general library information literacy program.
Reference: Provide general reference service and research assistance in collaboration with the other public services librarians. Provide in-depth reference service to both undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in the School of Education and the Department of Health and Exercise Science.
Collection Development: Coordinate collection development for the above-named departments. Work closely with the classroom faculty in these departments to assess the needs of the academic programs in order to select library resources in varied formats. Also responsible for the development and maintenance of the Children's /Young Adult Collection and various curriculum collections.
Required: ALA-accredited master's degree and a broad knowledge of education and curriculum resources. Educational background and/or experience in a relevant discipline. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Initiative, flexibility, and a strong service orientation.
Preferred: Collection development, reference and instruction experience in an academic setting. Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies. Work experience in pre-K-12 settings. Significant experience using education and curriculum resources. Experience working with graduate or continuing professional students.

The School of Education is housed in one of TCNJ's newest academic buildings—a three-story, 72,000-square-foot facility with 20 “smart classrooms,” offices for faculty and administrators, a computer lab, a 165-seat auditorium, a seminar room, an observation room for the counselor education program, and a cafe. The School comprises four departments—Elementary and Early Childhood Education; Special Education, Language and Literacy; Educational Administration and Secondary Education; and Counselor Education—that offer a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
R. Barbara Gitenstein Library is a five-story, 135,000-square-foot facility that serves as an intellectual, cultural, and social center for the college. In addition to housing traditional library collections and services, the building provides 26 group study rooms, two instructional computer labs, a cafe, a late-night study area, and a 105-seat multi-purpose auditorium. The library's collections consist of more than 700,000 volumes that have been selected by faculty and subject-specialist librarians to support course offerings of the college and to provide a broad representative collection of titles across many disciplines. The library has access to more than 67,000 periodical titles in a variety of formats.
Appointment: Appointment will be commensurate with experience, either at the rank of Librarian III (Instructor in the Library), with a current salary range of $59,270 – $68,162, or Librarian II (Assistant Professor in the Library), with a current salary range of $72,045 – $87,857. If PT, the salary will be prorated commensurate with the FTE. This position is available July 1, 2021.
