Southwestern University seeks a strategic and innovative professional to serve as the next Vice President for Finance and Administration (“VPFA”). This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly selective private liberal arts college in the south. Reporting directly to President Laura Trombley, the VPFA will have responsibility for financial planning, management, and assessment of the financial activities of the University, as well as leadership of the information technology, facilities, auxiliary services, and enterprise risk management activities. 

 

Founded in 1840 in Georgetown, Texas, Southwestern prides itself on providing 1,500 undergraduates with distinctive, high-impact learning designed to foster intellectual and personal growth. The University enjoys a reputation for academic excellence, for a distinctive curriculum and co-curriculum that encourages students to make connections through a special focus on incorporating perspective from multiple disciplines and experiences. At Southwestern there are 108 full-time faculty members and 40 part-time faculty. The student to faculty ratio is 12:1. Over the last six years, the University has enjoyed record enrollments and the most diverse and academically talented classes in the University’s history. Approximately 40% of the fall 2020 incoming class are from underrepresented groups, 26% of whom are Hispanic. Eighty-eight percent of the students are from Texas while the remainder come from 33 states and 12 countries.

 

Southwestern enjoys a balanced budget and is in a strong financial position. The endowment as of the end of the Fiscal Year 2020 was $320 million and the operating budget for Fiscal Year 2021 is $60M. University leadership is currently developing a Tactical Plan that will serve as the guide to the tracking and funding of the key goals that are ultimately agreed upon. A major factor in strengthening the financial picture of the university and beginning the implementation of the Tactical Plan is fundraising. In recent years, it has been at an all-time high. In mid-2020, the University completed the third year of the most ambitious comprehensive campaign in its history by announcing $85 million in new gifts and pledges. 

 

As this new era in Southwestern University’s history unfolds, the Vice President for Finance and Administration will be expected to provide strong leadership as the University addresses the challenges and opportunities that will result in financial stability driven by strong academic programs. The VPFA will be a confidant to and financial executive for the President; serve as a trusted advisor to the Board of Trustees and its Committees; and provide vital data and analyses to support fellow Vice Presidents, Deans, faculty, and staff. The successful candidate will be a knowledgeable and collaborative leader with an understanding of the challenges confronting higher education, as well as the ability to mesh successfully with the collegial culture of Southwestern. The VPFA will possess excellent business acumen skills; experience managing a complex portfolio; and a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and open communication. An MBA or relevant advanced degree is preferred.
