Adjunct Professor of Law and Director, Business for Society Institute

Berkeley Law and the Berkeley Law Center for Law and Business (BLCB) invites applications for the position of Director of the Business in Society Institute. This appointment will be made in the Adjunct Professor series.

Overview:

BCLB is the focal point at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law for curriculum development, research, conferences and workshops, and student activities on issues at the intersection of law and business. Berkeley Law is consistently rated by US News & World Report as having one of the top business law programs in the country, based on its extensive curriculum and the high quality, high impact research of its faculty. BCLB's scope encompasses not only finance and business law, but also venture capital, private equity, business associations, financial fraud, securities litigation, corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions, and capital markets.

The Business in Society Institute (BISI), housed within the Berkeley Center for Law and Business (BLCB), advances legal and policy agendas that encourage companies to account for stakeholders, the environment, employees, and customers when implementing policies. The Institute's mission is to advocate for this broader articulation of corporate purpose through reforms to business norms, corporate law, and corporate governance, focusing on the intersection between corporate law and social, racial, and environmental justice. Through symposia and executive education programs, the Institute forms a bridge between academia and leaders in corporate sustainability. Drawing on the expertise of leading business law faculty, students and alumni, the Institute prepares the next generation of leaders, produces and/or supports scholarly work, facilitates thoughtful leadership, and collaborates with global companies, investors, and NGO's in South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The Director is responsible for upholding the mission of the Institute with a primary focus on leading overall research efforts and administration oversight. The Director has full responsibility for all aspects of: seeking grants and raising funds to support BISI and the Center's staff and activities; creating and managing the BISI's budget; planning and organizing seminars and conferences; maintaining strong relationships with sponsoring and partner organizations; developing courses and teaching within the business law curriculum at the School of Law; advising law students and supporting them with a variety of career development opportunities; and coordinating BISI's support of student-led organizations and programs.

The candidate will direct daily operations of the Institute, act as principal investigator on research and publications, develop and/or assist with the development of curricular offerings for the School of Law (including for revenue-generating programs such as Executive Education), create learning opportunities for students, and oversee related Executive Education programs. This includes working with various stakeholders, such as the BCLB Faculty Directors, to oversee the qualitative and quantitative design in all areas related to the institute.

As an adjunct professor, the incumbent is expected to regularly teach and mentor students, perform and publish research, and contribute public and University service. Teaching and/or co-teaching responsibilities may include courses in the J.D. program and/or Legal Studies program, such as: Business in Society, Sustainable Capitalism & ESG, Business and Human Rights, Social Enterprise Law, and Corporations in Crisis.
