The Opportunity
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, internationally renowned for its innovative academic programs in a range of disciplines, groundbreaking research and scholarship, and leading-edge patient care, seeks its next Chief Human Resources Officer. In a comprehensive new ranking, U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 “Best Graduate Schools” list includes 17 UAB programs in the top 25—including a healthcare management program that is ranked first in the nation. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Chief Human Resources Officer (“CHRO”) will lead an HR organization that includes 107 employees and seven direct reports across Benefits, Compensation, Employee Assistance & Counseling Center, Employee Relations, Employee Wellness, HR Campus Consultants, HR Communications and support services, HR Information Systems, HR Service Center, Organizational Learning & Development, Records Administration & Compliance as well as Recruitment Services. The Search Committee invites nominations of and applications for a collaborative, innovative and dynamic leader who is committed to excellence and who will further UAB’s mission, vision and values outlined in the institution’s strategic plan Forging the Future. The central task for the new CHRO is to support the mission, vision and goals of UAB by developing long-range human capital plans and strategies including recruiting, retaining, rewarding and developing faculty and staff. The CHRO will lead a strategic, transparent, and customer-service-oriented HR division characterized by functional and operational excellence to: translate broad strategies into specific structures, plans, and processes that support strategic priorities and implement them in a measured and focused manner to enhance organizational effectiveness; drive execution across all levels of the organization while measuring both group and individual performance against key operational, strategic, and financial results; work closely with UAB’s administration to align human resources, financial, and operational systems for optimal efficiency. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a human resources leader, ideally in higher education or an academic medicine environment. A bachelor’s degree is required with a master’s degree preferred.
