Rowan recognizes that diversity, equity and access are educational, economic, and civic imperatives and that diversity is essential to achieving academic excellence.  The new Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is the home for the Title IX Office, the Office of Social Justice, Inclusion and Conflict Resolution, Faculty Center, Achieving Success through Collaboration, Engagement, and Determination (ASCEND) and Creating Higher Aspiration and Motivation Project (CHAMP) student support programs.

The Division of DEI at Rowan University leads and supports initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion by:

  • Developing and sustaining meaningful partnerships with internal and external constituents that result in a more diverse and inclusive community;
  • Utilizing data to inform continuous improvement efforts and innovation; and
  • Implementing university-wide culturally responsive and relevant programming that result in equitable educational opportunities for students and an affirming culture and climate.

The Office of Social Justice, Inclusion, and Conflict Resolution is committed to establishing transformative educational experiences. Through culturally sustaining practices, we aim to cultivate leadership, identity development, and global citizenship by empowering our community at Rowan and beyond.

SJICR strives to create a collaborative environment where staff are valued and supported holistically.

The Assistant Director of SJICR, will provide leadership and monitoring of the Dr. Harley E. Flack Student Mentoring Program as Leadership & Training programs; serve on the leadership team with the Director and Assistant Directors of SJICR; and assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to promote a campus climate that is inclusive and supportive of a diverse student population.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Office of Social Justice, Inclusion & Conflict Resolution

  •  In collaboration with the leadership team, provide anti-racist, equity minded leadership in the Office of Social Justice, Inclusion & Conflict Resolution to develop and assess programs that will assist students with identity development, leadership, and global citizenship.
  • Providing ongoing support and advising of student organizations affiliated with the department.
  • Develop & Coordinate Social Justice training programs for student leaders in key areas of campus life.
  • Provide vision, coordination, and oversight of the annual Social Justice Leadership Retreat & Student Presidents’ Council.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Orientation and Leadership Programs to align leadership programs with Bronze, Silver, and Gold Leadership Certifications.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative university-wide academic, social and personal measures, learning opportunities, and citizenship development support required to ensure persistence and graduation of Harley E. Flack mentoring program participants.
  • Lead in the selection, hiring, and training of student peer mentors and graduate coordinators.                                                       
  •  Develop and maintain the mentor’s training guide and supplementary materials.
  •  Stay abreast of research regarding best practices for the development, assessment and institutionalization of successful mentoring and leadership programs to support a diverse student population.
  • Oversee semester and annual evaluation of leadership & mentoring programs, monitor program progress and achievements, develop and monitor learning outcomes, maintain statistical data, and monitor student mentor/mentee grades.
  • Maintain and update Harley E. Flack & leadership program marketing materials for annual recruitment and on-going activities, maintain and update mentoring program’s website, develop and implement strategies for ensuring students participate in mentoring and university-wide events, and formulate and deliver program recruitment presentations.

Inclusive Campus Culture Initiatives

  • Build campus wide partnerships that support student engagement in experiential education initiatives which promote  identity development, leadership, and global citizenship through the lens of social justice.
  • Support strategies to promote recruitment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented and underserved students.
  • Promote an understanding of the supports and systems that are most effective in helping students that are underrepresented, underserved, or who experience systemic and culturally based forms of bias and prejudice to succeed in higher education.

General/Overarching

  • Provide assistance with promoting civic engagement, college coping skills, and academic and social integration.
  • Serve on a variety of campus committees as assigned.
  • Work evenings, weekends and other times as required.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs, Public Administration, or a related discipline.

Required Experience:

(3) Three years of related and progressively responsible experience in work related to diversity, social justice and inclusion in the college/university environment; direct experience planning and coordinating programs serving populations of students that are underrepresented, underserved, or who experience systemic and culturally based forms of bias and prejudice; experience with mentoring programs and fundraising or with grant writing preferred.

Qualifications:

A clear record of accomplished collaborative involvement with the campus, the community, office staff and management is desired. Ability to maintain appropriate professional confidentiality. Ability to work in a stressful environment and with great attention to detail.

Communication Skills

Ability to communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of university students, staff, faculty, and trustees; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets and contracts; and respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Reasoning Skills

Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, conduct assessment of needs and program effectiveness, and apply data and analysis skills to the formulation of proposals and solutions.

Technology

Proficient in use of technology to carry out electronic communication and develop both printed and electronic documents using computers and the Internet. Experience with Windows or Macintosh system software, Microsoft Office (Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Access), Outlook and other email software, Canva, and Banner (preferred) as well as fluency in social media (Instagram & Facebook). Understanding of relational database systems and ability to oversee maintenance of technology assets.
