Director, Cross Cultural Center
Salary Range: $85,000 - $120,000 /year
A unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor-Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Cross Cultural Center a holistic learning environment where training, programs, workshops, art exhibits, and open dialogue take place. The Cross Cultural Center is a central hub for empowering and building community among students, faculty, and staff. This center also provides the opportunity for historically underrepresented and underserved UC San Diego students and staff to learn about themselves, learn about others, develop as leaders, and to impact communities for social change.
Under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and in support of the University’s mission with respect to diversity and inclusion as well as the Cross Cultural Center’s mission, the Director takes a leadership role in building community and creating a dynamic and diverse student, staff, and faculty experience within the University of California.
The Director leads innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identify, implement and evaluate programs, training, and practices directed to addressing/impacting diversity-related issues on the campus and in the community, and provides campus unit/group training and consultation to build capacity to address these issues as they are identified. The Director provides creative leadership, strategic planning, and vision regarding the role the Cross Cultural Center plays in support of the academic and public service missions of UC San Diego, and in collaboration with other campus units, is responsible for envisioning, overseeing, and developing an EDI training program for the campus community; including the design of EDI curricula from inception and/or refreshing existing curricula for campus-wide audiences and customized training for targeted audiences in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion education.
The Director serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor's leadership team and participates in Unit strategic planning and organizational development and serves as a subject matter expert to senior leaders in VC EDI. Incumbent undertakes special projects assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, or Chief of Staff that are often highly sensitive and/or confidential in nature.
Serving as a Campus Diversity Officer, the Director works broadly across the university to establish and nurture campus-wide training collaborations to educate and promote understanding and awareness of cultural and other diversity issues. The Director acts as an information conduit, establishing effective communications between the VC-EDI and the campus community to help leverage diversity initiatives and fuel the diversity change process.
The Director develops strategic plans and fundraising objectives for the unit. The incumbent also oversees the Center’s operations, including budget development and human resources management; development and implementation of outreach programs, and development of training opportunities that incorporate understanding of student development and leadership principles in the day-to-day operation of the Center.

• A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive leadership in the field of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and five years of progressive experience in developing and delivering evidence-based training for students and/or adults. Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Advanced degree (masters' or terminal degree) preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of higher education areas including retention and recruitment strategies, student success, student and staff leadership development, campus climate issues, student life/student affairs, higher education organizational development, social justice and diversity, and change management.
• Professional skills in instructional design, development and delivery, and outstanding presentation skills. Ability to design, develop, and deliver effective trainings to college students and adults. In-depth knowledge of diversity issues and strategies used to address them. Ability to facilitate conversations and learning across a wide range of diversity-related topics. Proven ability to assess effectiveness of trainings.
• Expert level knowledge of diversity and social justice issues including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual-orientation, religious, and class background. Proven strong political acumen skills and ability to apply in diverse, complex organization. Proven ability to apply high ethical standards to business practices and decision-making.
• Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines. Extensive work experience in the development, interpretation and recommendation of complex protocols and guidelines.
• Ability to use key business skills, including thinking and planning strategically, applying business acumen, analyzing needs and proposing solutions, using financial and organizational measurement and other data, applying process redesign methods and practices, and influencing stakeholders. Ability to apply experience, knowledge, and judgment to discriminate between business practices that are good and poor, right and wrong, effective and ineffective.
• Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and/or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees. Strong knowledge of human resource management concepts and practices, performance management models and practices, and career development practices. Knowledge of the concepts of business and financial management principles. Ability to understand, analyze, and interpret financial information and to identify necessary action plan.
• Strong ability to lead by example. Ability to provide leadership that motivates and develops staff and creates a positive work environment. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Experience in multi-tasking and performing under constant pressure of deadlines. Experience working independently in unstructured projects and situations, identifying priorities, and applying creativity and originality in problem solving in an environment with changing priorities.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Excellent communication skills to effectively interact tactfully and diplomatically, yet assertively, with all segments of the campus and community; skill in resolving conflict situations and in recognizing politically sensitive situations. Ability to be decisive when necessary and to effectively communicate rationale. Ability to be open to questioning of decision-making and exhibit openness to alternatives without displaying defensive behavior.
• Advanced skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service.
• Background check required.
