VICE PRESIDENT AND DEAN OF STUDENTS

VICE PRESIDENT AND DEAN OF STUDENTS

OBERLIN COLLEGE AND CONSERVATORY

OBERLIN, OH

Oberlin College and Conservatory (Oberlin), one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, seeks an experienced, collaborative, and creative leader to serve as the Vice President and Dean of Students (Vice President). This is an outstanding opportunity to shape student life at an important moment in Oberlin’s history. The Vice President will be an institutional leader and will serve Oberlin’s students as an inspiring, dynamic educator. The Vice President will be a partner to the President and senior leadership team and expand and strengthen cooperation across the academic and co-curricular landscape, while fostering an exceptional undergraduate experience that prepares students for lives of personal and professional fulfillment.

Amongst leading liberal arts colleges, Oberlin is unique for the two distinct – yet interrelated – bodies that comprise the institution: the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory. The College of Arts and Sciences enrolls 2,400 students across 45 majors and contains approximately 235 members of the faculty. The Conservatory offers world-class musical instruction to more than 500 students and contains approximately 103 members of faculty. Nearly 200 students earn degrees in both the College and the Conservatory. Oberlin is also an institution deeply committed to access and equity, as the first college to adopt policies for admitting African American students and the granting of bachelor’s degrees to women.

This next Vice President and Dean of Students will further shape and define the experience of students at Oberlin, while remaining true to its rich history of student engagement. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the Vice President will provide visionary leadership and guidance to a division of 98 student life professionals and service providers; cultivate, strengthen, and coalesce the work of the division; partner across campus; engage with students in building a unifying identity; foster a climate of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and strengthen student success and engagement. In doing so, the Vice President will champion students and student affairs and serve as a trusted colleague and partner to the senior leadership team, bringing a nuanced understanding of how curricular and co-curricular activities strengthen and complement one another. The next Vice President will bring to Oberlin a deep familiarity with trends and challenges in the field of student affairs. Leading candidates will be highly effective communicators with superb judgment and the interpersonal and personnel skills necessary to nurture and sustain excellence, collaboration, respect, and transparency among all constituencies and stakeholders.
