Chief Information Officer and Vice President, Information Technology Services

University of California, Office of the President, an institution with a fundamental mission of teaching, research and public service, seeks a strategic, collaborative and innovative IT executive to serve as its next Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Vice President, Information Technology Services. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead IT for a university system and have a state and global impact. 

 

The University of California (UC) is recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in education, technology, research and public service. The UC system enrolls more than 285,000 students, and employs over 230,000 faculty and staff. The annual Operating Budget for the enterprise is over $39 billion. The University consists of ten campuses, six academic medical centers and 12 hospitals, one national laboratory directly managed and two under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, statewide agricultural and natural resources programs, various off-site education and research activities and the Office of the President (UCOP) - the central administrative organization for the University.

 

The Office of the President (UCOP), located in Oakland, CA, serves as the university's headquarters. UCOP coordinates activities that allow a complex and unique system to operate efficiently as one university, furthering its public interest, academic and research missions. It oversees and manages programs that serve the entire university. The Information Technology Services department delivers data and technology services and, through collaboration with partners, transforms the role of Information Technology to advance the UC mission. 

 

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the CIO serves as the enterprise IT leader and visionary strategist for the University of California system, the state's third largest employer. The system CIO is a critical hire for UC and will require a dynamic and visible leader who will bring strong strategic and operational leadership with a track record of success transforming IT in a complex institution. The CIO will develop a shared vision for the future of IT working collaboratively with the UC campuses. This leader will be an effective communicator who can build strong relationships with the campus CIOs and other leaders across the UC system. The CIO will have a high degree of emotional intelligence and be able to manage expectations and challenges. An innovative leader who can leverage digital strategies and maximize resources is essential. The CIO will have broad knowledge of the current IT landscape and a vision for the future that will strengthen UC's position as a leader in higher education.

 

The incoming CIO is a key leadership position and will have a central role in supporting UCOP's strategic priorities which include simplifying and consolidating the portfolio of IT services, further developing the data analytics infrastructure, enhancing information security, growing online education and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The CIO will be an engaging, transparent thought leader and partner with demonstrated experience in developing a high performing, diverse and inclusive team. The CIO will be a system-wide advocate and consensus builder with constituencies across the UC continuum, the Board of Regents and the community. A strong appreciation of and commitment to UC's mission is essential.
