The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) and Barrett, The Honors College (BHC) at Arizona State University (ASU) invite applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Instructor position with an anticipated start date of August, 2021. Subsequent academic year renewals (Aug. 16 to May 15) are contingent upon performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the units.

We seek an individual who is dedicated to excellence in teaching; is invested in developing inclusive curricula and teaching approaches to support the success of our diverse students, many of whom belong to underrepresented demographics in STEM disciplines; and is excited to collaborate with faculty members who are engaged in research and education in the various fields of the Life Sciences.

The successful candidate will coordinate with Faculty Honors Advisors and other faculty members at both units to provide high quality Honors recitation/discussion sections, honors enrichment contracts, and opportunities for non-laboratory/field-work research opportunities for interested BHC students who major and/or minor in the life sciences. In particular, the Instructor will create and offer meaningful Honors enrichment experiences to accompany the Tempe campus Introductory Biology courses (BIO181 and BIO182) including supervising teaching assistants. The instructor will be trained in online instruction and pedagogy and will use adaptive learning and other educational technologies to develop a scalable, digital curriculum for Honors students in SoLS.

The School of Life Sciences is a broadly interdisciplinary community of undergraduates, M.S. and Ph.D. students, staff, and faculty members who are committed to transforming science education and research by making learning more accessible, inclusive, and impactful through innovations in teaching and research. The successful candidate will join this community of teacher-scholars who collaborate in nationally recognized interdisciplinary research and education programs such as the Center for Biodiversity Outcomes, the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training program in Solar Energy (IGERT-SUN), the Global Drylands Center, and the Research in Inclusive STEM Education (RISE) Center, among others.

BHC attracts a diverse group of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriching and challenging academic experience that prepares them to become leaders in their communities and better citizens of the world. The successful candidate will work in partnership with BHC to deliver an academically rigorous biology curriculum to ASU Honors student community. Together with other Honors faculty, this individual will provide an invaluable service to BHC and its students by offering honors courses, honors-only sections, and honors enrichment contracts, will serve on thesis/creative project committees, as a Faculty Honors Advisor, as Honors Faculty Council member, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
• PhD degree in biology, biology education, or a closely related field by time of appointment
• Substantial intellectual engagement with issues in biology and STEM education
• Two years of post-secondary teaching experience in biology (or closely related field).
• Demonstrated organizational and communication skills
• A record of using evidence-based methods of teaching that promote mastery of biological concepts and higher-order thinking (e.g. inclusive pedagogy methods, use of technology to engage students and assess learning in large courses, teaching awards)

Desired qualifications:
• Experience teaching honors courses and/or advanced students
• Experience in mentoring undergraduate student research
• Experience creating curriculum, including lectures, formative and summative assessments, and classroom activities
• Experience teaching online, with demonstrated commitment to serving and understanding the particular needs of online students
• Experience using technology to engage students and assess learning in large courses (e.g., response/polling systems, VR/AR simulations, smart whiteboards)
• Experience using a learning management system (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) for quizzes, discussions, assignments, or other forms of interaction to support learning
• Demonstrated success meeting the needs of underrepresented student populations or reaching out to diverse communities
• Evidence of collaborative activities with other faculty, teaching & research assistants and staff
• Participation in the higher education community and professional development activities (e.g. authoring educational and scientific publications, professional outreach activities, attending and presenting at conferences and workshops, etc.)
