Flatiron Research Fellow, Structural Molecular Biophysics

POSITION SUMMARY

The Center for Computational Biology (CCB) and the Center for Computational Mathematics (CCM) have created a joint research group in Structural and Molecular Biophysics. The goals of this new group include the creation of new computational methods that will enable scientists to analyze the large, complex data sets that are being generated by new experimental technologies, as well as new techniques for molecular and structural modeling. The Flatiron Research Fellow will be responsible for research and algorithm development, working under the guidance of Project Leaders/Research Scientists in the group. Particular areas of interest are molecular dynamics and/or cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and their use in exploring biologically relevant questions. Flatiron Research Fellows are generally two year-appointments, and can be renewed for a third year, contingent on performance.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working collaboratively with other members of CCB and CCM in the development of algorithms to analyze cryo-EM, cryo-ET and/or molecular dynamics simulations
  • Collaborating with experimentalists and theorists internally and externally
  • Actively participating in the preparation of manuscripts for publication and presentation at scientific conferences
  • Assisting in peer- and student-mentorship
  • Sharing expertise and provide training and guidance to group members as needed



This position will be based, and have a principle office or workspace, at the foundation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Ph.D in biophysics, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, statistics, computer science or related disciplines.



Related Skills & Other Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in biomolecular simulation, cryo-EM or related discipline
  • Demonstrated abilities in theoretical analysis, software and algorithm development, modeling and/or molecular simulations
  • Prior experience with cryo-EM, molecular dynamics simulation, machine learning, numerical optimization, or biophysics preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication, data documentation, and presentation skills preferred
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate on multidisciplinary research in a collegial environment
