Position summary

Under the direction of the President, the Chief Diversity Officer leads diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion and social justice efforts across the institution.  The CDO will work closely with the Provost, Academic Senate Leaders, and the Directors of Human Resources, Development, and Alumni Relations in order to advance work with administrative and academic constituencies, as well as with our alumni community.  This work includes supporting advances in the academic domain as well as being responsible for the implementation of the university’s diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion efforts.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

This is full-time twelve-month position that reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the University Leadership Team and ex-officio member of the Academic Senate Leadership Committee (SLC).  The CDO also leads the President’s Inclusion Council.

Plans, guides, and advises the President and the Provost and Senior Vice President on issues relating to diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion across all areas at the university

Serves as a trainer, and educational resource for academic programs and staff development throughout the University with a focus on issues and policies related to diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion.

Applies research, knowledge, and best practices to inform institutional strategies and promote equitable policies and practices.

Communicates and articulates university efforts and initiatives specific to the diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion strategic plan to internal and external constituents.

Assists with securing grants and fund raising efforts to foster DEI throughout the institution.

Performs other duties as assigned by the President.

 

Degree and area of specialization

Doctoral degree required; demonstrated track record working on diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion in organizations; preferably organizations with a global/distributed reach.

 

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience

5 years of experience in higher education, preferably diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion in student or academic affairs. A combination of higher education and corporate sector is also acceptable.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience and strengths in the following areas

Experience in creating and delivering DEI oriented educational offerings, such as training and formal courses.  Experience with adult learners a plus.

Possess cultural competency.

Experience with change management, group facilitation, and conflict resolution.

Demonstrated expertise in DEI scholarship and consultation.

Outstanding written and interpersonal communications skills.

Collaborative and diplomatic relationship style that serves to promote respect and practice of civility and inclusivity in the workplace.

Ability to use and incorporate data in the decision-making process.

Demonstrated ability for self-initiation and creative thinking.

 

Salary and location Full-time position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and includes a benefits package.   This is a remote working position. Post-pandemic, travel will be required.
