Kalamazoo College (K) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students.

Founded in 1833, Kalamazoo College today is a premier liberal arts institution and one of the nation’s 100 oldest colleges and universities. The College’s mission is to prepare its graduates to better understand, live successfully within, and provide enlightened leadership to a richly diverse and increasingly complex world. The K curriculum combines rigorous academics with study abroad, career preparation opportunities, civic engagement, social justice leadership, and a capstone research or creative project in the senior year.

Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students has oversight of 12 divisional offices and departments, and through the implementation of initiatives, advocacy, review, and evaluation, leads the Division and focuses the campus on an education that is “student-centered.” The VP and Dean oversees a staff of approximately 30 and has 7 direct reports, including the Senior Associate Dean of Students, Associate Dean of Students, Director of the Student Health Center, Director of the Counseling Center, Director of Campus Safety, Chaplain and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life, and an Executive Assistant.

The next Vice President will be energized by the following opportunities and challenges, among others: supporting and engaging the student body as the campus transitions out of the pandemic and beyond; being an effective agent for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice; partnering, communicating, and collaborating across the College in support of students; bringing innovation and vision to the Student Development Division; and stewarding student development resources.

Kalamazoo seeks a student affairs leader able to navigate the changing higher education landscape, collaborate across the campus in support of students, and engage with an impressive and vocal student body. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for serving and advocating for the unique needs of undergraduate students from a range of socioeconomic, racial, sexual identity, and other backgrounds; an unyielding commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice and demonstrated history of consistent progress advancing these issues in a campus environment, and experience supporting student mental health, managing crises, and demonstrating calm under pressure.
